poorly platy

It is good to test your water every now and again to make sure everything is still ok. I found that link BTW - it's in my signature now.

thanks for the advice yesterday.

the platy seems a bit better today, has been swimming more, still has periods of being still but time will tell.....

have done a water change and white filter change tonight.

thanks again

Regarding your question about protective fish - I have one female swordtail (Meri) who I think of as my nursemaid fish. Whenever one of my swordies has been ill I will always find Meri standing guard over it. She also does guard duty over the other females when they are having babies. She won't let anyone near a swordie having babies and as far as I can tell she never snacks on fry. When the fry start venturing out of hiding they always seem to hang around her like they know they are safe if Auntie Meri is nearby.

thanks for that polardbear....i'm intrigued to hear of other fish being protective, if it doesn't sound too silly, it kinda seems that they have 'feelings and emotions'???

when my first honey gouramis died, months ago, they stayed with each other, it was awful to see but what cud i do???

the red admiral gouramis were next, we came down one morning to find them both dead... it looked like one had got caught under a corner of a rock and the other was at the side of it.... not stuck or anything, but as if it had been trying to help, if you know what i mean???

in both cases, i found the behaviour of 'being together' upsetting really.... even fish have loved ones!! LOL!!

It can be quite sad at times. I had a pair of red neon swordies that had pretty much paired off a while back. Huey would never let Blondie out of his sight, sadly Blondie died while having babies and Huey was devastated. He wouldn't eat or anything, just hung out in the corner where I found Blondie's body and died a few days later. Meri hung out with him the whole time and wouldn't let anyone near him, she'd go over and gently bump him occasionally like she was trying to get him up and moving around but he'd just ignore her. I swear she even tried to get him to eat - I tried dropping shrimp pellets down to him (his favorite food) and Meri would swim over to the pellets and then turn around and look at him as if to say "c'mon Huey there's shrimp pellets over here, just for you!".
