I found some little pet shop near me some little backstreet one, they had a Halfmoon Betta, with about 18 neon tetras. The Betta's tail was being nipped at and had quite a bit missing. The Betta was obviously in stress and told this guy in there that they are 'Ornaments' One tank had 'Ich' and all the fish had little white spots and some even had things that look like blood lines or something like that. I was absolutely disgusted-_-

I would report them to your local authorities. You can do this anonymously as far as I'm aware. Animal cruelty is illegal, whether it's a fish or a horse.

Oh, and I think your sig quote comes from Chicken Run, the movie ;)

I might! It came up in my History lesson, it was just on the board, so I used it;-)

I thought my LFS was bad!

Get them reported :)

I wasn't actually meant to go there! But I was walking past and thought 'I'll have a gander round' It was awful:|

I heard that many [international chain megamarket] fish departments had to be shutdown because of such poor conditions. That's why I refuse to shop there and even ( I don't know if you guys have those around here but it is a chain around central new York) because so many of their fish have ich

you might have to remove the store names from your post, pal :) I made the mistake not so long ago only to be corrected by another member of these forums. Stops the thread being shut down ;)

Oops thanks for the heads up! I'm rather new to the forums I'm still learning the parameters

Would fish being artificially dyed come under this?
Some people might agree with it but I think it just looks wrong all togther

Jakey, there is no point to starting a thread like this. We have all had problems with our local fish stores but unless you can name names, such a thread is almost meaningless. More likely the LFS is widely regarded as a good local source. I do not doubt your own experience at your LFS but rather find these threads totally useless. People will not simply avoid a shop based on a single person's rather narrow experiences and anything else would be a waste of your time.

Any chance there could be a section setup on LFS reviews for each part of the country if possible?

If it was possible I think that would be a good idea as I, like a lot if others have lost fish due to purchasing infected ones from 'so-called reputable fish/pet stores'. I appreciate sometimes mistakes can happen but there is a local store near me which is getting quite a poor reputation & I feel that purchasers/consumers have a right to know other peoples experiences, both good & bad. You wouldn't buy a car from a notorious back street garage hence why should we be allowed to buy fish from poor fish/pet stores?!
That's just the way I feel!!

This has been suggested and discussed numerous times before. The issue with such a section is making sure that any descriptions are kept as being the individual's genuine experience of the store and not descending into ad hominem attacks on the staff or what could be seen as slander against the store/their owners. Especially with large chain stores they have huge legal teams at their disposal who would, frankly, rip the forum apart if they felt anything that was written reflected poorly on the store and was untrue. Bearing in mind the fact that this a forum that is owned by a single person, if it came to that then it would be his personal assets on the line. At this stage he's not willing/able to do that for the sake of a bit of free speech on your part. It doesn't mean it won't be possible in the future, but currently we just can't offer this as an option. :good:

I fully understand that to be honest. I was thinking more along the lines of a rating system but then again there's a few fish stores I've been to that I feel I should share my opinion on. Some good and some not so good

Don't like bashing lfs's but a little family run one near me had some female bettas homed together with some males (3m 15-20f) with a sign underneath reading "female fighter fish, best kept in a group of 5 with at least 1 male"

As you can imagine they all had tore fins, lots of chasing and flaring... When i mentioned it i was told "they're fighting fish, it's what they do"...
