Pond Filters In Tanks

These days, a lot of us have larger tanks, 100 Gallons and what not, and these tanks take a lot of filtration, which in turn, takes a lot of money (FX5's and the like).

My question is, can we use pond filters in our fish tanks?
You can buy a pond filter that can filter as much as 3 FX5's for the same price these days, is this the future option?

Can anyone think of any downsides to this?
Noise perhaps? Are pond filters quiet, I've never had to hear one before?

I was in B&Q the other day and saw a pond filter, with was rated @ 5000ltr turn over, with a built in uv. It was £59!! It was also a bit smaller than the FX5. I also looked into those All Pond Solution filters because they are also a steal. OM47 made a good point though, he questioned about the spare parts for these kind of filters, also they are not from trusted names.

Pond filters are fine, but they do break down more easily (nowadays) and create a hell of a lot more mess when they do! They also consume more electricity (with more powerful pumps).

On the plus side, I've seen pond filters used in combination with sumps indoors to good effect.

I agree about spare parts, but surely companies like Blagdon (interpet) would sell spares, especially if it's designed to look after your £1500 koi.
I must say though, a trusted name only becomes trusted through use.

Hmm so the long cost might be a bit more, but surely that's acceptable when keeping things like Discus, which need pristine water?

No issues with spare parts for the APS filters. They're just SunSun ones and you can get pretty much any part through APS.. my only gripe with the filter is the bends over the tank edge and the plastic used for them and the spray bar. You can tell it's cheap there.. but otherwise, the filter is spot on and well worth the price.

Ive often wondered this, when I were to get a much bigger tank I would def get a pond pump I think. Or at least look into it as much as I can so this should be a good read

Vic made a good point about the £1500 koi to be fair, its odd but there are a lot more people that take kois more seriously than tanks so for a range of pond pumps to be duds would be catastrophic to the companies image.

I've found out pretty much everything I can about them, except one thing, noise.

I still have no clue whether or not pond filters are noisy, obviously there are different types (pressured, drip etc) but no one seems to know as they all have them outdoors..

Any ideas at all?

Reason I'm asking is quite simple, I'm looking to get a new tank within the next 2 years or so, a nice 4ft, nothing too big. I have a major problem with filtration as even now, my 64L is maintained by a 600Lph filter and I think it's just barely enough..

so a 4ft for me, would need to be a pond filter, ideally something in the range of 2000-6000Lph.

I have the 1400 with the UV and it's almost silent. You can hear a slight hum if the room is silent, but mine's out in the open at the minute and once in the cabinet, I expect to hear nothing at all.

if i was going to use a pond filter to filter a tank i wouldn't use a normal pump which sits inside the tank but an oase aquamax dry.
