I have a very limited knowledge of politics, but recently have learnt a lot due to my involvement in stopping the Conservatives selling off all of the British Forestry Commission land- you can read more and sign a petition at http://www.38degrees.org.uk/page/s/save-our-forests

I have emailed all of the House of Lords, my MP twice, some other MP's, David Cameron and Caroline Spelman twice, put posters, basically changed the homepage of my website to the campaign etc..
But a lot of the House of Lords (which has more labour than tories) who I have contacted are completely against it, which is reassuring. Also, the Labour party is completely against it. But when there was debate last week the voting was 310:260 for the sell off but I think this is because of the large majority of Tories. It says the Public Bodies Bill is currently going through Parliament and that it is at the committee stage of the House of Lords.

What I want to know is
: Do the House of Lords have the power to reject the changes to the bill (and allow the sell off)
If not, what changes can they make and do the House of Commons have to accept these?
If it is passed through the House of Lords how is the final bill given permission to become law? Is it a voting system? Can anyone else stop it?

Thanks for any answers, they will probably reassure me, as I'm trying my best to stop this but it would be nice to know a bit more about how it works and whether it will be stopped. Oh and by the way- DON'T VOTE CONSERVATIVE!

before this thread gets into deep debate, remember to keep it a debate and not spiral into personal slanging matches regarding political views. We will be keeping an eye on this thread...

sort answer is YES the LORDS can reject amendments to the bill. but these can be restored further down the line, by the commons. so all would not be lost.
but everybody need to keep up the pressure, this is a nonsense bill. there i not even any financial saving, or gain from doing it. however there are a lot of rich (well connected) people who will to make money for themselves, if they are sold off. guess which party is their natural stomping ground? it will also allow then to keep the riff raf in their place. instead of walking in THEIR forest, they should stay in their allotted housing estates.

pssssst, you wont believe it, but they let anyone into forests today. disgusting isn't it? some people just don't know their place!

KILL THE BILL, EXPRESS YOUR WILL.

Thanks for your reply. Hopefully the Lords will reject it. Sign the petition if you haven't already done so. Is a law passed through a voting system? i.e. if more than half vote against it will it be thrown out? Also, if it says a consultation is running until April does this mean the law cannot be passed until the consultation is over?

in theory yes. however the government can use a "guillotine" motion to force through bills that are being held up.
