Well if you've got that kind of a budget, I'd go for a second hand 5 or 6ft x 2ft x 2ft tank with an FX5/equivalent. It'd be a belter tank that he could live his life out in.

I agree wholeheartedly. Buy the biggest 2nd hand tank you can find and use the money you saved to buy top quality filter and other bits. I would say that the tank they are in at the moment is definately too small. I bought my tank off ebay and am looking out for another one in the new year. There is a 6 foot one on ebay right now but I don't have room for it

I have a large tank here who only has one resident in it currently, and thats Ellis, nad he could do wtih a robust and steady 'friend'.

Edited to add: Can I put in a sneaky recommendation for Ems as a new home for the common? She's a close friend of mine and has tonnes of fish experience, and is plec mad like me
