I've had my pleco for years now, but I need to move him to rescape my tank. He freaks out for ages when I put my hands in the tank though, and I don't want him harming himself, so how do I catch him to be rehoused for a week?

I think he's a common pleco, but I could be wrong.

Thanks :)

well, i've only ever moved one, large, pleco. we waited till it went in to its tube,. then put a hand over each end, and lifted it out! as nets are a no no, it seemed the best option to me.

as for ID. "common" covers a few fish. i dont feel it's a "gibbiceps"/sailfin. but it may well be some version of the gibbiceps. as its dorsal fin and tail are so big, i don't think it's a Hypostomus Plecostomus (more often than not, its what people think of as a "common"). dont know if that helps.

looks like Hypostomus punctatus, common pleco.
boboboy has the right idea, you don't wanna be using a net as the plec has sharp spines that will get stuck in the net, you don't really wanna be grabbing it as i have no doubt one of them spines is quite capable of going straight through your hand given enough force!
getting a tube is a good idea , wait for the fella to go in and block off both ends, even use hands to block it off as the sharp spines are on the top and side of the fish.
good luck!

Dave
