Oh sorry this will be kinda long. Ok I was in a petstore the other day and over heard the fish manager tell a customer something out rageous. Ok first of all he was telling them that ALL fishs bodies produce salt and if you do not add aquarium salt to the water then the salt will come out of the fish (because the unsalted water will pull it out) and they will die, he also told them that it is the activated carbon in the filter that ADDS oxygen to the water, he said that they are little oxygen stones and after 30 days they can no longer make oxygen and the fish will become stressed, he said that only very little oxygen comes from surface agitation and most of it comes from the carbon. He has also told people that the little sacs on the cheeks of bubble-eyed goldfish are air sacs that hold air for the fishs to breath, he tells people that you have to wait 1-2 weeks before putting any fish into your new fish tank, oh and he makes sure that his employees tell customers these same things. Is this guy an idiot or is there any truth to any of this and I am the idiot? Also I think you might all find it interesting that the fish tags at this pet store states that pangasius cat fish and pink kissing gouramis only reach 6 inches in lenght. What do you guys think?

Yet another case of an LFS telling porkies to make customers buy more products!

The only half truth is waiting 1-2 weeks before adding a fish to a new tank, but that depends on what size tank you have, if your doing a fishless cycle, it's just not as clear cut as that.

The whole salt thing is down to the fishes bodies, osmosis etc. If i remember rightly saltwater fish exchange liquid and waste through the skin, and pass little urine. Freshwater fish pass waste more urine and little through the skin. A little salt for tolerant tropicals can help them be more healthy, but only if all the fish in the tank are compatible.

The carbon oxygen thing is totally wrong, as is the "fact" about the bubble eyes.

woogrl you're definitely not the idiot.

Bring in a copy of a periodic table and ask how element 12, carbon, can sponteneously become element 16, oxygen. Apart from high temperatures and pressure where fusion reactions take place, like the center of a star, it just ain't happening.

I don't think carbon becomes oxygen at any point during it's life regardless of anything that happens to it.

Thanks for the input, I'm glad that I am not the idiot. Tha truth is is that this guy is my boss and I hate listening to him talk to customers and telling them these things. Then the next time they come in with questions they question my knowledge because I tell them the real truth, they think that because he is the manager he knows all and I know nothing. Here is also what I know, I went on vatcation for 2 weeks and when I got back 2 hand-fed birds had died, one is very ill, another bird we had had for monthes dies and our $200 beautiful male panther chameleon died shortly after I returned, coincidence or not it just all seems weird, and our fish loss seems to be kinda high. Im not saying that I am the only person who can do things right in the department, but I cant help to think that things might have been alot different if I would have been there to take care of them the way I always do. Sorry I just needed to rant for a minute I am geting very frustrated by this job right now and needed to vent. Thanks for listening. :X

I would try and sit down and talk to him if you can before things get out of hand, good luck.
