Please Inspire Me ! 150G Stocking

Pike cichlids! Very active fish some stay 8", 12" and upto 18" monsters! Some very good looking specimens available!

Beaten to it! :shout:

if a pike does appeal to you then stay well away from CRENICICHLA STRIGATA. a stunning fish and growth rate is very fast but they soon become fin rippers and quite aggressive. just got rid of mine

What about a Jack Dempsey? Beautiful fish, and speaking from my experience, tough but not argumentative. I have a female though.

JD's .... lol. not for me.

Ahhhh booo  They are magnificent fish. Chilli is right though. They can hold their own but IME don't go looking for a fight. I've kept all mine with tetras, plecs and all sorts. Even shrimp, untill my current female taught my male to see them as food that is. I have a 6" female who beats up the my 8" electric blue male, and all my females have been more aggressive than males :look:

All great advice and discussion. Thanks !

As I think about this more, I am reaslising that I really like "slow" fish. I'm not into fish that rush around. So chocs and sevs really do suit me well. I guess JD's would too, if they weren't quite so pugnacious !

Any of the viejas, also bocourti, pearsei etc, they are all quite continually active fish, and are not really what I'm looking for. I'd want to give fish like that more space to swim also.

My current thoughts are to probably get 2 or 3 more sevs.

You really would be quite surprised at how placid they can be, and also how slowly they just glide around the tank. The pugnacious attitude of Jacks is a big misconception IMHO. Yes, like all cichlids you can get one that is a right d**k, so you just try another. I've had 3 pairs of Jacks, all have been docile. All different original familys i might add, they've all been kept with tetras ect no problems. :good:

Hi,

what about a Festivum?

they are pretty calm and not bullish. They look very nice once grown.

Here a pic of mine.

Rainbow cichlid, small, brightly coloured, fairly peaceful, you could get away with a small group possibly

they have some stunning rainbow cichlids in at wharf at the minute and a good 4 inch fish too :good:

Matt, do me a favour. PM me, or just post the address of this Wharf aquatics. Really really really want to take a trip there. Everything you say about it makes me want to take a trip up there. Especially when you mention all these New World Cichlids they always have in! My local area (40 mile radius) doesnt seem to have much in the way of cichlids, certainly not the more unusual of the lot.

Any joy on the Sev ringaround this afternoon?

Was good to meet you, your fish and your spotless tanks today, Hamfist! The Brochis have integrated with the other four, although I got a bit worried during acclimitisation when one got a bit stressed, but they all perked up quickly when released and your old trio definitely knock spots off the condition of the other four. Thanks again for the rocks and slate too.

yep, definately good to meet you too today ! Good to hear that the Brochis have settled in well so far.

Ended up going to Aquajardin and buying a gold sev and an absolutely stunning, chunky male blue acara (hopefully this one will not want to make babies with my choc !).
My current green sev is VERY interested in the new gold sev. Not sure if he fancies her madly or wants to beat her up though. She is not too chuffed at all the attention whatever! It'll all settle down I'm sure.
Biff (the choc) seems to have accepted the newcomers, although he did feel the need to demonstrate his superior physique and strength as soon as he saw them. I'm hopeful all will be well.

Aquajardin did have a batch of very nice patterned red-spot sevs (exactly what I was looking for !). However, they are tatty as anything. Infected with who knows what and definately not for sale at the moment. I'll be keeping an eye on them !

Excellent news! Fingers crossed the new Blue Acara behaves.

Well, the blue acara has settled in no problems but my green sev has had to go into isolation in a 20 litre bucket for a while, as he was harrassing the new gold sev too much. I'll pop him back in this evening and see if things are better between them. My big choc has, unexpectedly, simply accepted both newcomers without a complaint.

Ahhh don't you love cichlids :p Glad its sort of working out, fingers crossed isolation does the trick for you :)
