Playing With Stocking Ideas

My pictus doesn't seem to eat everything (I have heard they have a bad reputation for this). He lives with my Khuli's and has never had a munch on them (yet). He also lives with my GBRs and apart from chasing them away from his hidey spot, he leaves everyone alone. My GBRs actually gave him hell when they last had their eggs! He gets fed pretty well so I'm not sure if that'd have something to do with it?

Just because he doesn't at the moment, doesn't mean he won't when he gets older. They are predatory fish, better suited to bigger tanks with larger fish (so they don't make lunch of them! )

How many ft is this tank of mine because when I bought it I was told it's 4ft 200L (well, I've now found out maybe it's 200L before substrate ). The angel has no choice but to go in there as he's currently in an 80L tank...he's only still a juvinile but obviously is out growing his currently tank so I figured it's a million times nicer on him to go in the larger tank. I did want to get a 2nd Angel if it will be okay to put in the larger tank but am thinking this won't be possible The neons can be taken back to the lfs although they are fine in the tank they are in now. Again, rams are fine where they are however can be taken back to lfs if need be.

The ones I can't or won't move on are the pictus, angel and dwarf gourami. I would prefer to not shift the rams if I can help it, they are pretty cute with loads of character

I understand this, but he is fully grown already so I assume if he would've caused me trouble he would've done it by now. Mind you, he's a suspect in the missing neon tetra saga that happened a while ago

Thanks for all the help again, I don't mean to sound as if I'm pooh-hooing all the advice. I'm just trying to work it all out and find out what's best for me. Apparently having a few tanks in the house raises the electricity bill (in a tad bit of trouble for that) and I'm studying plus working so I don't have time for four tanks...fingers crossed I manage to lessen the load a little.

Erm, what? 4 ft is 1.2192 metres and one metre is the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum in 1⁄299,792,458 of a second. In other words: 4 ft is 4 ft. If you don't think it is, get a tape measure and measure it. I have no idea how you expect me to go there and measure

Of course the maximum volume is without substrate. How do you expect the manufacturer to guess how much substrate you plan to put in and what type?

Good numbers for angels are 1, a proven pair or 6+. 200 litre is a great improvement on an 80 litre.. but why did you not research before buying the fish? What you did there, is no different from keeping a cat or a dog in a cage 24/7 for part of its life.

..are you proposing to pull them out of the pictus's stomach with a pair of tweezers, or something? Or when will it turn from "should" to "need"?

Well, tough luck: they are your responsibility and if anything happens to the tetras or rams, it will be your own fault, not the fishs' which does the eating

I actually find your comments quiet rude & insulting. I'm asking for advice not to be made feel like an idiot.

My tank is 2nd hand so I can only go off what the seller has told me. Going by my measurements the tank is 4ft. The neons are not going in with the pictus so your comments on 'pulling it out of his mouth with tweezers' are irrelevant. I've owned this angel fish since before I joined this forum & am now learning that indeed I should have research before buying it. Honestly, was there any need to make reference to keeping a cat or dog in a cage 24/7? I am also completely aware these fish are my responsibility hence why I am asking for advice to what is best for not only myself but for my fish.

Can I also pin point that these fish are in a better position with me where they are than with a) the people who I could give the fish too or b) the lfs? Atleast I am trying to do what is best for them. If they go back to the lfs they will end up in the same situation, if not worse, with the person not eventually realizing what they are doing is wrong? Or with my friend who refuses to listen tithe advice I have actually gotten off here so her fish live in an overcrowded tank with poor tankmate compatibility.

So I would appreciate you either being a little kinder in your comments or not replying to this thread or any of my future threads anymore.

What exactly do you find rude and insulting? The fact that I question how you look after your animals? Whether you are prepared to take responsibility for your actions? Why you did not do the research? How you plan to account for the nature of your animals? These are all serious questions which I want you to think about and answer.

You asked how to measure the aquarium: you got told to do so with a measuring tape. You asked whether you can fit more fish: you got told which combinations work, but that I do not recommend it. Is that not advice?

And yes, you are an idiot if you kill your own animals, but this is your opportunity to learn and not be one. I recommend you take it.

That's good to hear, but you did imply that they and the rams will stay with the pictus unless there are problems, in which case you're taking them back to the LFS.

Yes, there was, because most people treat animals which are capable of making sounds as alive and fish as ornaments. There is little difference between the two, other than one is easier to empathise with. For those who do not realise the activity level of some species, that tends to be a more realistic comparison.

If you've seen as many animals killed by irresponsible owners as I have, you probably would be quite as unkind as I am. "Haha I just killed my fish" has become common reading material for me. I will not promise to be any kinder and I will continue replying to any thread which takes my interest, as this is, pretty much, a public forum. If you do not care for my advice and questioning, then I am quite sure there is a button somewhere which will hide them from you.
