I was wondering which would be better for a 55g?
the sand would have to be bottom feeder safe also

I voted for the playsand, it's cheap, comes in big bags and is easy to clean. Gravel would also be suitable but this depends on the size of the grains, also it must be smooth to avoid damaging the mouths of bottom feeders such as corydoras and plecs.

Playsand tends to be darker than pool sand, however this depends on the brand, the darkest I've seen is the stuff from Tarmac.

i voted for gravel cos my oscars make a right mess of sand ,but i have had sand before and liked the look of it ( play sand) have never seen pool sand

Gravel, sand is a nightmare too keep looking good IMO.

Sand looks fantastic so long as you put no fish in there to poop all over it. Maybe Im just anal about stuff like that, but seeing poo 30 seconds after cleaning it for the millioneth time drive me insane.

Even if you have cories or loaches, providing the gravel is small and smooth they wont have any problems.

the bottom feeders would most likley be corys or maybe a rainbow or red tailed shark

Play sand - its cheap, looks great, is lovely and light coloured and makes it easier when doing water changes to remove the fish mess.

Funnily enough I've just finished converting one of my tanks from gravel to sand about an hour ago.
