play sand or silica sand?

you can't use sand with an undergravel filter
most platns wont grow with an undergravel filter
beach sand is totally unsafe for use with fish, not to mention illegal.
 
oh thankyou CFC thats the best answer I had all day!! I'll be buying the silica sand :thumbs:

Nope using beach sand will be salty as mccy d chips and could be storing bad stuff for your tank, also it's too fine for a under gravel filter. I'ved had cabomba growing with a under gravel plate quite well with gravel. If you want a planted tank though get yourself a internal filter and change it over, if you run the filter with the under gravel for a few weeks before hand you should have enough beneficial bacteria in there to do away with the gravel!
