I have been reading slowly through the starter section of this forum, and I have seen plants mentioned a few times.
I just have two quick questions.
1/ Do you need plants in a 100 litre Juwel tank?
2/ Where can you get them if you do need them. The pet shops I have been to seem only to stock plastic ones for decoration.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I just want to set up the tank as best as Ican.

Cheers.

1/ Do you need plants in a 100L Jewel Tank?
That's completely up to you. It looks much prettier with.

2/ Where can you get them if you do need them. The pet shops I have been to seem only to stock plastic ones for decoration.I have no idea, most other people know, You can use plastic ones, as they are MUCH easier to use and they do the same thing (except for C02 and some other stuff that is not entirley important)

Hope I helped.

Its always nice if you see a plant locally that's on your plant list. You can see directly what condition its in and you can satisfy the desire to get it right there and then.

But these days a lot of hobbyists order plants and have them shipped. Your location hasn't shown up yet in your profile. Where are you, if you care to mention?

how can they do the same thing as live plants  unless you mean they sit there

And 'some other stuff' is actually important, ok they arent a necessity but they do help to remove toxins & CO2 and replace Oxygen in the water. Something plastic plants cant do ;)

If you're in the uk,the best place to buy live plants over the counter is Pets at Home (usually not fish though!!),or I believe it's Petsmart in the US.
Go to a local fish shop and they will more than likely have non aquatic plants for sale as well as the pukka ones, that's been my experience anyway.

plants improove water quality and can be bought at major chain pet shops that sell fish usually

I've been sold non-aquatics at petsmart too, so they are not immune!

the plants in my local pets @ home look pretty good actually.

I'd say the best place to get plants is ebay, just look for a good seller

The best place to get plants is unquestionably from one of the online retailers selling Tropica or Aquafleur plants - you pay for the quality, though.

Do have a look in the buy/sell/swap forum here though - lots of owners of planted tanks regularly have cuttings to get rid of.

You can get caught on eBay for non aquatic plants too, best bet if you go to Pets at Home is to buy plants with the Tropica label on until you get to know what you're looking for,or post your tank stats and I'm sure folks will suggest what to get.
I have to say,my local PAH is very good for plants, and I haven't seen a non aquatic one yet.
I got a sword in there the other day for £3.99 that you would have paid £17 + £5 postage for online.

Tropica is the dream plant place of the world, those of us in the states are incredibly jealous of you UK folks for that
:p

its up to you, plastic or real/if you have the money and the time go for the live plants, but if you dont have the time or the money go for the plastic or silk.ive seen so nice tanks on here with plastic plants, lots with real ones to,its up to you as long as your fish are happy :good:

Plants can be the primary filter in a tank if used properly, although it is possible to run a tank without them. I find the best plants are the ones that I get from fellow club members. They are often far superior quality to anything that I can buy over the internet or in a LFS and they are things that I can't ever find locally in any shop. It does take some learning to deal with plants but it is far from impossible to do so. Some of the low light plants can be grown in almost any tank and will flourish while other can be much more demanding.

Thanks for all the info. I have managed to get a live plant at a big pet shop down the country.
I now have another question after reading through all the replies.
What is a low light plant? What do I ask for, just a low light plant?
The lights are not working in the tank as yet. I have not been able to find a replacement unit as I dont know what model my juwel tank is, i think it may be an oldish one.
Anyone any ideas on finding out the info.

Cheers.

Mike.
