For my new 5 foot tank I want to go for the natural look with plants. I don't want to inject co2 though - could I just have one of those plant substrate thins(which do you recommend?) and feed them (which plant food? and how often to feed them?) also I've heard about fertilezers are these the food? Completely new to this i'll have as much info as possible :good:

Can you list what plants I could have with no co2 :)

Also It don't say the lighting on the tube but its says "The Light for Plant Growth" lol.

Thanks Lucy :D

how many watts do the tube(S) equate to? and are they more than an inch in diameter? an inch in diameter? or less than an inch in diameter?

you could feed plants with TPN+ (tropica plant nutrition +) daily and easy carbo may help too, both available from:

www.aquaessentials.co.uk

if you want a plant substrate that is cheap and good, go for tropica plant substrate and cap it with an inch and half of sand at the front and deeper towards the back to create a sense of depth, we cant tell you what plants will be suitable until we have lighting specs and the depth of the tank

no not tropica plant substrate, it clouds too much imo. awful when uprooting plants and trying to scape. pain in the ####

it says on the packet, to up root slightly then snip the roots, and im sure this would help promote new growth too.

its one of the cheapest substrates available and its very good. ive uprooted many plants with it using the above method and ive only ever had one problem with it...the sand capper being too thin so my fish dug it out.

Okay well heres what it says on my light:

Original
F025/ (30"/ 50mm)
The plant Growth Lamp
Recyable
Made in bla bla bla

And on the other side their is just a plain 31

Also how long would a 250ml tub of TPN+ last?

Would a Rena cal basic 150 watt heater do?

25 watts is very low light so plants such as anubias would be good along with crypts, vallis and some mosses.
how many litres is the tank? only then can we tell you how long the TPN+ woud last, on my 125 litre tank 250 ml would last me 50 days.
again how big is it, if its somewhere in the region of 400 litres i would use 400 watts of heating

Is that an aquarium bulb or a house plant bulb?

Stick with the slow growers, for they demand little nutrients to maintain their growth. They are more expensive than the stem plants, which are fast growers, but in the long run cheaper and easier to take care of.

Cheapest substrate is EL NATURAL
1.1” of topsoil
2.crushed oyster shells, mix well and smooth.
3.Add just enough water to wet the soil.
4.1 to 1.5” of gravel or pool filter sand
Then add a layer of gravel around the edges of the tank. Set each plant and add gravel around it. After you have all the plants in,

If tap water has high Ph don't use the crusched oyster shells. They are in the bird section of pet store. Even though some only do water changes 1x a year with this set up. It is best to do it at least 1x a month.

Okay well I've been thinking, I'm going to go with, pots, wood and a few plants - could I dose every 2 days or so?

And I would have 3 of these kind of archways at different sizes, small medium and large. How do you think this would work?

What ferts you need depends on the plants structure, your lights, substrate and water parameters. I need name of plants and brand of light to have an idea of what ferts you need. I fert I have found that only needs dosing weekly is the KNO3, potassium nitrate. What works for 1 person doesn't work for everyone. Some do nothing and have great plant growth. I am not able to do that for I got the wrong plants for the light I have and have extremely treated water.

I would start with easy plants, like hornwort, java fern and anubias.

Love your idea of the archways.

you will get restricted growth if you plant in the pots. but i think you are on about plant pots for caves

Yes nick :good: I would take the plants out and bury them in the sand and special substrate so they could get the nutrients. How much plant substrate stuff would I need to cover the bottom in a fairly okay depth.
