Excuse the poor Snapchat drawing but this was the only way I could think to explain it.

Planning to get a 500 litre tank next year and probably stock with large cichlids. I love the look of tall Vals at the back of the tank but am aware of the unpredictability of cichlids and plants.

I’ve included an image of my idea. Essentially planting a load of Vals along the back of the tank (green dots). I would them let them grow and root before adding a number of large/tall stones almost touching the back wall of the tank. I would only leave enough space for the plants to grow, but in theory no fish would be able to get down the back to access the roots.

Would this work, or are fish likely to rip the plants out from the top anyway?

Hey Oli,

It depends on what kind of cichlids you're looking at stocking. Plants wouldn't last in many kinds of Malawi or tang tanks as the fish eat algae and plant matter alike.
