I just found out that the gravel I am using(came with tank that I bough months ago second hand) in my 33 gallon that ive just set up a week ago is buffering the water !

Just great, my ph and hardness is already bloody high, going from 8.2 or so to 8.8, geees

turns out that the gravel has chiippings of what looks like beach shells ! not alot though, can hardly see them, but its bufffering the water so it got to go !

Now i was wondering where i can get some gravel as fine as 1mm, nice and cheap, under 5 pound a bag.

could b & q sell small pea gravel ? If I cant find any cheap places,

or garden centres,

also if you have bought gravel from a place other than a lfs who charge the earth jsut becuase it has the word aquarium on it, could you please say so, what you bought and where ?

Thanks

I got a 25Kg bag of pool filter sand for a tenner from a pool cleaner guys house.

Found the guy in the local paper advertising pool cleaning and filter setups.

The grain is it about 1mm and less. The best bit is i can stick the gravel vac right to the bottom if needed and it dosnt suck it up.

most garden centres do all sorts of different gravel which is sometimes cheap or some times sky high as ive found out in the past.

Thanks for the replys,

Rodge, that really good actaully, that you can still vac it all the way through, but doesnt this maybe different if you have a stronger siphon going >? Dunno

I will have a look at garden centres and see what i can get
