just been browsing aquarium treatments and have been looking at pimafix and melafix. the list of what they will treat seems impressive but are they really that good that it would be worth having a bottle of each on standby

from what i have read on here they are extremely good. it is up to if you want to have them on standby, it might be good if you cant get to a shop close by.

Both pretty good, its always a good idea to have meds on hand because normally you need them when you dont have them and the shops are closed or you have no cash handy.

as said very good treatments and can both be used to gether to fight infections and secondary infections

Yes both can assist the prevention and early treatment of bacterial & fungal infections, and as stated can be used (and tend to work better) in combination.
BTW if you want to save lots of $, it's very easy to make your own. Just use 1% oil to 99% distilled water.
For Melafix use tea tree oil. For Pimafix use West Indian bay oil.

Personally I don't rate either of them unless you have to, because your fish are so sensitive to treatments with proper chemicals.

Personally I have to had quite range of treatments, but I would recomend a good white and anti bacterial treatment. Something like esha exit and exha 2000. Which can also be used together should you be unlucky enough to have both at the same time.

yep melafix is a mild anti-biotic, and pima fix is a mild anti fungal agent.

I have a bottle of each in my cures box, if you get serious outbreaks of something serious they`re not the greatest but they are very usefull if you catch a disease early enough...

Both are good, but they aren't miracle workers either. They have their limitations. You have to remember that both are actually pretty mild medications. This is obviosuly good for the fish, because then they aren't anywhere as negatively affected as they would be with harsher medications. But, they also don't pack quite the punch to the bacteria or fungus that you are trying to kill that the stronger medicines do.

I think that it is a good idea to have a broad spectrum of medications on hand, because you never know the moment you are going to want to treat your fish. Having Mela-and Pimafix around is good. But also a good anti-ich medication, a good strong set of anti-bacterial medications, and maybe more depending on what your fish seem to get. If you store them away in a cool, dark, dry place those medications can last a very long time. Sure, they have expiration dates on them, but those are designed to make you throw away your old stuff to buy new, not because the medicine has gone bad. Like I said, store them away, and if they are unopened, they are good for at least 4 or 5 years.

hmm interesting responses. i hope never to have to use them but at the same time i am thinking it would be sensible to be prepared

personally i don't rate them at all. The only times I have seen them possibly helping has been in cases where plenty of clean water was just as effective, and for more serious infections I have always needed real medications.... mind you I don't use that many meds of any type.
