If you can get some clearer shots might help...try Crenicichla strigata

They were the best I could get! I'll keep trying though. There is a lot of wood in the tank and he like one particular piece!
If it help I can describe it a little. It has a number of faint darker patches just below the dorsal fin. It has a dark line running from the bottom of its eye towards the belly 5mm and one towards the tail 10mm. Also it has a sort of pin stripe running down both flanks and quite spotted on the head!

After searching some pictures, seriously fish has a close picture but all the others I find of Crenicichla strigata look off but then I found 2 other pics 1 was a juvie xingu 1, and the other was sp. venezuela.

I'm happy with it, its just that when the time comes for him to go I need to know what he is! Oh and his potential size! I dont need a micropeltis sized monster! LOL

My guess was either Strigata like Nelly or sp Venezuela - not sure if its got enough red on for the latter though? It looks like a 14 inch species though so not quite a Micropeltis but still a decent sized bruiser.

Thats ok I do quite like him and he holds his own with the big boys! His mouth opens really wide!

closest i can work out is Crenicichla punctata, but i doubt that's it. nice fish though!
