S. nigrita is one of the species sold under the name upside down catfish (as are eupterus sometimes), so if it makes you feel better, only two thirds of what he told you about them was a lie. Even having a store for 20 years, best case scenario he does know his stuff, but it's almost impossible to remember every species of fish or plant that comes through the store. If the fish are healthy, I wouldn't quit shopping there, but I'd definitely quit talking to the guy.

If it helps in the future, S. nigriventris (the "real" upside down catfish) looks more like a cory than a syno. They're a bit fat around the head, and don't have the pronounced hump at their second dorsal fin. They do have the long feathery barbels like a syno to distinguish them from corys.
