The driftwood below was bought at a pet store this afternoon at between R40 and R55 for each piece.... (this is equivalent in $ 6.5 and in Pounds, 4 pounds each)... Considering that someone just picked it up near some riverbed,.... It's daylight robbery!!

Or is it justified??

i would say it is more profitable, and a lot easier - you dont have to have a load of tanks setup and lots of water changes etc.

And even the rock I saw there were sold by the Kilogram and mostly just common rock with no real shape.... People actually buy those....(I'm in the wrong side of the hobby)!

There is some nice rock in Wales (not much good to you like lol) but Dave Spencer uses it a lot, that could easily be sold £3 per Kg.

£4's a piece... It is difficult to see the size of those pieces, but it my local stores they would be on sale for anything between £10 and £20!

I guess if you have a local supply of the right sort of wood, you could make quite a killing.

well if you have a ready, free, supply of Mapani, or perhaps a large "forest" bog. you could be on to a good thing. however on a commercial scale, i doubt your prices would be much lower, especially after shipping costs are added. if i am honest, i think, anybody who buys stones/rock from an LFS, should get a reality check.

To be fair a have only ever bought my rock from the LFS, never even thought about getting it myself depsite the Peak District being on my doorstep pretty much.

I think I would only get wood from a recognised source though as I would never know which wood is safe or not! Any ideas bobo on the best local sources for ourselves, Bradgate Park could be good!!!!!

please ghent 3rd, i was not having a pop at those who do. its just, sometimes we as a hobby get caught up in the "get the proper stuff" syndrome. forgetting that a rock is a rock, is a rock wherever you get it! I would be careful of stuff from things like parks, evey tom, dick and rex poop and pee everywhere. they also have a habit of using herbisides to keep paths clear! B&Q or any garden center will supply you with vast amounts of rock, for the same price as a few rocks from an LFS too.

I put the wood in an outside 4ft tank with a few Oscars last night, & today the water looks like black tea... The Oscars however do not look stressed...

Is it like an emergency water change is needed, or will they be okay till it is time for their normal weekly water change??

apart from reducing light and a possibility of reducing O2, the fish will almost certainly love it, for a while.

I was aware you weren't having a pop bobo, I can actually see B&Q from my bedroom window in Leicester so that should be good for getting slate and rock. I did actually get some slate from there once before I seem to remember so will probably nip over there to check it out again very soon.

Better be quick before the good ones are taken... after this thread...

The ultimate aim of this wood is to put it in a fishtank as decoration in a restaurant..... Now if this is what it does to the water,... I don't think the owner will be happy??... How long is it before it stops discolouring the water, or will it just continue doing so???
