Pets At Home (uk)

Lol.
And yet he got a job there,
but they refused to give me an interview?
Hmm..
Yeah, I asked him.
He replied "The glass is made with the bacteria stuck on it so it is released when water is added"

you know too much youngfisher lol thats why they turned you away lol

bacteria on glass lmao it would be dead anyway all dried up for months on end and then when you get the tank home whats the first thing you do -------------------------- wash it out with hot water or a bleach solution and me thinks that would kill it too lol

My local P@H is Raynes Park. Im just curious about some of the bigger stores...Near where I live in Mitcham (London/Surrey border) we have Maidenhead Aquatics which I understand to be very good, but the MHA i went to in North London is shockingly bad (maybe I was just used to their normally high standards??)...But ill check out P@H and ill let you know what they are like!!!

Maidenhead Aquatics always get good reviews.
Very good at that!
They might of been having a bad week when you went there.
Or they could of been bad.
Yes, please let us know.
I think you should say
"I heard about buying ammonia to cycle my tank, is this true and needed?"
just to see what they reply.

I tried cycling with a mature sponge.
Full of ammonia.
(Not my choice).
And found it squished in my letter box.
Ammonia and tank water everywhere.
I have such great luck with fishkeeping!
Lol

This is always a good observation to think about, whether you're seeing a consistenly bad shop or a shop having a bad day!

When I was younger and single I went through a period where I ate out in restaurants 3 meals a day 7 days a week (yeah, I know, what a lazy guy) and eventually a thing dawned on me that was obvious in hindsight but I hadn't initially seen clearly:

There were some restaurants where people worked hard to make them consistently good, day after day. There some that were always bad. But there were many that went up and down to various degrees, indeed some that could vary all the way from great to terrible! Only by the circumstance of going over and over across time could I see this. If I'd only gone a couple of times I would have judged such a restaurant as very good or very bad based on what it was when I went.

Since shops that keep a lot of live tropical fish in a lot of tanks have by definition a pretty complicated thing going compared to a lot of the retail businesses out there, I'll bet there are shops that fall into all these categories, just like the restaurants.

wow, I must be lucky, I live over the road from the Grantham, lincs pets at home and they are brilliant.

The fish dept people are really helpful, and they seem to care about animals. They wont sell any fish to people when they buy a tank, they wont sell fish to people who dont have a filter or use a fishbowl. They do water tests for free and will happily do them every day until they reccomend you start putting fish in a tank.
They let my chihuahua run round the store and always give her treats and make a fuss of her. And the Hahnes Macaw I bought from them was in great condition.

So it seems to me not all pets at home are created equal!

my local one seems alright. clean tanks, few dead bodies.

I dont like the fact though they seem to throw male betta's in with other fish.

Personally I would'nt buy any livestock from them.

Another one, not too far away was terrible, dark, dirty and brown tanks. Saying that though I havent been there for quite a while

I love PAH Chatham! I speak to the manager often and hes informed me that they will be starting 'Aquatic Evenings' with deals on equipment and tanks and hes invited me to it. He has also applied for a second floor to be built on for a specialist aquatics section.

I do agree about the bettas, but they dont really have no where else to put them.

One thing i dont like is how they have their hospital tanks on show, looking at dead, half eaten, upside down, stuck to the filter fish is not what i want to see when i go in to look at the fish.

Humm, you sure you got that right, your water was fine, but they lied? sorry, but i doubt that.
mind you i would like to reverse the scenario though, and be able to go in and do a check on the water in the tanks of, any, LFS.

sorry its take a while to reply!

OK, so I popped into the Raynes Park store and like most LFS it had its good points and bad points. Equipment wise they are pretty good have a wide range and are resonably priced. I asked the assistant about a betta fish and knowing the answer already, she did ask the right questions and did tell me that I wouldnt be able to keep a betta with danios.

The state of the fish were interesting...some of the displays looked really good, and some of their tanks looked pretty dirty. I brought some Neon Tetras and the water in the bag, which was taken from another live tank, was disgusting. It had all sorts floating in there and gave me a big enough alarm that I didnt want to add my aquarium water to the bag and to let the little guys swim out, but to net them and put them in to my aquarium one by one- not ideal and did increase their stress.

I would buy again from there, but only if it was from a 'clean' tank...

Are you aware of "pour-through" netting? After you finish your temperature and water-add acclimations you just pour the water and fish from the bag through the net, which is held above another container, allowing you a quick and simple move of the fish from the bag to the tank with a bare minimum of their water getting into the tank.
