Hi,

I have 2 Peppered Corys and I want to get 1 more(maybe 2 but need to work out stocking levels) but they seem to be a bit rare around my way for some reason. My question is I know you should keep them in a group and I wondered if I get a dwarf Cory/ any other cory would that be acceptable for the Peppered corys or should it be exclusive to 3 or 4 Peppered corys?

Thanks

Exclusively Peppered cories... think of it this way: to you see different species trying to interbreed? They can tell who is 'one of them' and who is not. You're better off going with a few more peppered cories in the long term, even if it takes you a while to find them. I am not sure if you're British, but if you are I'm sure people would be able to a LFS who carries them if you ask... if not, ask on a local fish forum. Usually someone knows where to find pretty much any given fish :)

also consider peppered corydoras temperature requirements (20C - 24C). Generally quite cool compared to many other fish. I've given mine away today because my tank was too warm for them. They can stand higher than 24C but it will half their lifespan.

Thats what i thought but I heard a guy at pets at home advising someone that keeping 2 & 2 is just as good and it didn't sound right to me so thanks for clearing that up. I'm from Edinburgh, Pets at home do sometimes stock them but everytime I go in fish are dead or the have white spot or something like that so i'm going to ask the LFS when he will get them in but they have not been there for a month so i'm gonna venture out to another one to see what they have.

Cories can be kept in good health in small numbers with no harm. It is how we all did things 50 years ago. The only problem is that they were never very much to look at and all they did was eat and sleep. In a nice big group, I like at least 6 at a time, they have great personalities that just never come out when they are kept in ones and twos.

Boy isn't that the truth? I remember so many of my tanks with one or two corys and the little guys just sat there or shuffled around running their whiskers (barbells) over the gravel and seemed boring. I shutter to think what a "boring" situation I was unwittingly giving them... gravel that probably irritated their barbells and no company to have fun with!!
