Hi. Where can i find Paranhas in South Africa....and wot do I need to keep them happy in the tank?

Care will be different for each species. Any idea on what species you wanted?

I dont think you'll find any in south africa :P might have a bit of luck in a fish store though ;)...Id imagine your talking about the generic red bellied pihrana, in which case, a large species tank with a shoal of no less then 6-8 :)

If you knew anyone in the Americas or elsewhere that has piranhas I'm sure they could ship you some (unless it's illegal).

I wud like to own paranhas....but im not too clued up with them. Thats why I need ur info and opinions pls.

Yes. Iv owned many fish thru the years...i just assume paranhas need more specialised attention.

First check that it is legal to keep them. It might not be in South Africa, as the weather would be warm enough for escaped/dumped piranhas to survive in the wild and reproduce, killing off local wildlife. For this reason, keeping piranhas is illegal in many of the southern states of the US, but legal in the UK and northern US.

Good idea...though im sure its ok here...its South Africa. just keeping the lights on is a task for them. lol lol

Please elaborate...

Piranha's don't require much more care than any other fish. And yes, they can eat like beasts if tank lights aren't too bright, they're in a decent sized shoal, and big enough tank and nice water parameters, but the 99% of the time they aren't eating, they sit there and do nothing.

BOOOOOORRRRRING.

You might want to research the south american cichlids to find out more on how to raise pirahnas, there neighbors in the wild.
