I've looked up about paradise fish since I saw some in my LFS and I know the males can be aggressive before spawning by defending the eggs but I didn't know if they would be ok in my 22gal (see sig).

Is a 4" max size about right?

Thanks

You are talking about macropodus opercularis right? Well the males of this species, once mature, are aggressive whether spawning or not. With them being the more colorful and having more impressive fins, I assume you were interested in this sex rather than a female. If so, you are best off avoiding them as (besides the fact that you should only get 1 as 2 or more males would fight), it would probably harass the rams and would almost deffinately end up harming the honeys - even killing them. A female might work but you are better off not risking it at all - particularly as the fish you have in there already mean your tank is fully stocked and soem of them - such as the ghost knife - also make your tank over-stocked and you'll soon need to upgrade. Basically, with rams and other gouramies and large-growing fish already in there, you are better off not adding any more gourami-type fish at all (perhaps nothing at all until the knife is moved for that matter).

edit: yes, 4" is about right if you include the long tail extensions of the male. The average is more like 3" and males are slightly larger over-all than the deeper-bodied females (without considering fins which are much longer in males).

Thanks silvia!

You must be psycic, I had put originally that I was selling my BGK to the LFS soon so not to take it into account. Yes, I know my tank is fully stocked - I think about 25-28" of fish (roughly) would be perfect as the tank is long plus I have a powerhead at one end displacing the water and a Rena Plus 2 the other end with the spraybar displacing the surface water.

Thanks for the advice, I really have no clue on these fish. I would have looked at a pair but from what you said I'll leave it I think.

Hmm, I'm stumpted now - yes, I think I have enough grouamis too but I have no ideas what to get now! :dunno:

The paradise fish that I had (in a smaller tank mind you) killed everything that I had with it. It's a long story how I came about him and he was the wrong fish for my tank, but that's my experience. I took him back to the LFS.

I think a group of some peaceful schooling fish would make a ncie addition if you want my opinion. You still have the over-stocking issue with the knife and very small fsh would also get eaten eventualy but, if you plan to move the knife, a school of something like harlequin rasboras or black phantom tetras or something would balance out the tank nicely..
