Hello everybody. I have a question. I am trying to cycle a 10 gallon tank ( many of you already know) :D. I know that you need oxygen to cycle for the bacteria. I have a hood on my tank that has almost no way for oxygen to get into the tank besides the food hole and a little space around the filter. oxygen enters the water though the ripples but if there is no "new" oxygen entering the space above the water and under the hood is that an issue? I opened the food flap so maybe oxygen can go though there.

Thanks for your help. :D

Oxygen will easily disperse into the areas under your hood, I believe it's to do with osmosis (i.e low densities vs high densities of particles).
Even the smallest hole really will allow oxygen to circulate, even the gaps where your hood meets the glass would be enough.
This is why you don't suffocate when you hide under the duvet :p.

It should not be a problem. Your hood and filter lid are not even close to being air tight.

Thanks for your help :D. I should have known that :p.

Once again thanks :D.

Yeh I don't think they would design a tank that is air tight would they even if it was possible?

It's certainly possible for it to be airtight, but they'd have to design in provision for heater cables and airtubes. It would raise the price of the tank considerably. Not worthwhile, therefore not commercially viable.

Currently I have slits around the edges of my lid that are hopefully not quite large enough for fish to jump through but I rather like having more openings as it keeps the fog off my lid. WD

Umm. They did that :S

As in airtight gromets for the cables? My tank has cut-outs for them, but they're not airtight.

I have cut outs for them but there is still space around them. The lid its self is completely closed though.

Not airtight then. TO be airtight, you'd need rubber or neoprene seals all round. Like I said, not worth doing.

Ok thanks :D. Do you think mine would be sufficient enough to let enough oxygen in for the whole 10 gallon tank?

That is good to know :D. Thanks for your help :D :D.
