search function is not working returning an error so sorry since this has probly been posted.

i am fighting an algae bloom although i think its getting pretty much under control i have been doing very frequent water changes. So im just wondering can i use an outside hose because it would make my life easier.

I know the temps could be too cold and perhaps cause shock ( i am in florida though so its still warm here), so i would keep the % of water down. but is it safe? not sure if tap water is significantly different then hose water

It should come from the same supply if it is attached to your house. For colder water just run it in a little slower, many folks with larger tanks do this.

I think it makes a significant difference whether your filter is mature or not. With a filter that's less than 6 months old I just wouldn't think it was worth it to risk damage to the bacteria and I'd at least split the dechlor dose and put half in up front at the beginning of the water change and the other half at the end. Once a filter is on past 6 months (to just make a generalized guess mostly) I'd worry a lot less if I was delayed in getting the dechlor dose in or even forgot it on a less than 50% change. I personally try to still be careful and use dechlor in correct amounts because I consider it cheap, harmless insurance, but among the most experienced-sounding hobbyists here on TFF, the controversy continues to be displayed in that some fish-keepers routinely don't use dechlor and others routinely do and report instances of filters being wiped out sometimes when they didn't use dechlor.

I think that water that has been sitting in a hose is not a good idea. I can smell plasticizers when I first turn on a garden hose. It would probably be OK if you flush the hose first.

barker_23 - "Could you add the dechlorinator after the water is already in then?"

when are you suppose to? right now all i usually mix my does up in a pitcher then dump it in about halfway through replacing the water i took out is this ok practice ?
