So was shoppoing for a new catfish the other day found this tiny little fella sold as a "wild caught" Shovelnose cat.

Now I know what a shovelnose should look like, but this was a baby with no markings. I thought it could be something to do with stress from it being kept in a small tank along with a much larger bunch of juvi cobra snakeheads!!!!!

So I get it home, on closer inspection in my perfect water quarantine, it most certainly isn't what I was hoping it was!!

Turns out it is a "Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii" or "Bagrus Goliath" Catfish.

Here are some pics of my new little guy:

Sadly these things get beyond huge!
My pond for Marulius would not be adequate for this guy.
What makes it sadder is these are very very hard to find.

Look at this pic to get an understanding of size:

Well, before I return it, I have offered it up to anyone with the right home for it on another "monster" forum.

Just thought I would share my little mishap!

 was not expecting that!! Seen these on a few UK importers lists recently including adverts on our online fish trading site ......

Stunning fish when small but its just not a feasible animal to house at home really is it? Good luck :D

Im very interested to see how fast it grows :)

Really neat fish and very cool looking.

Poor thing its like nemo he got taken from his natural habitat. That might be thousands of fish that will never be born now that someone took it from the wild. And its endangered that just great it really makes me sick seeing fish legends become harmed and extinct because we humans are to stuck up and have stuff to far up there @$$ and very where and just jerks to nature to keep nature well and working.

In china an ancient fish is probably extinct and many more may fallow because the dams that were built for china made it impossible for the chinese paddle fish to go back to its breeding grounds and spawn now thats the humans they havent been seen since 2003 in the wild. now other giants like the chinese sturgeon and others may face the same fait and thats just AAAAWWWHHHHH!!!!!!! :frustrate:

Yes they are "stunning" watched a programme the other day where someone caught something much like that, makes a real grunting noise out of water, well hopefully you will find a home for the "little" guy, if not have you any large aqauriums around you which you could donate him too?

^^ I was thinking that. I'd hate to see a fish like that end up back in a LFS just to be sold to another person but where the end result is it ends up dead. At least in an aquarium it'd possibly have a chance to spawn and at the very least it'd actually get to grow to full size.

LOL spaceship :D

He is a gorgeous little fella, and I wouldn't let him get into unexperienced hands.

Keep it a couple of months....fish and chips on you? :p

But really, quite a situation you are in.

Not a bad situation really. I could keep it for a good few years before moving it on, I have many big tanks and a pond. But problem is, can be difficult to move on once grown.

I will return it to the LFS, but would rather offer to give it to someone who knows what it is, how big it gets and can accomadate it before returning it.

Great stuff!

The Catfish is being collected in person in a few days.
It is going to a guy not too far from me who has a huuuuuge (15ft x 6ft x 6ft) wall aquarium as the back wall of his bar/restuarant!

I am so glad it will go to an avid collector.
He is also bring me a huge sack of high quality sinking pellets made by a very well know fish farm here in Japan, and has offered me a "uniquely patterned" Juruense cat.
like this one:

So all in all, a good little number!

Lovely cat, and I like the one you're getting in a 'swap' even better!

Sorted!

My guy came this morning to collect the monster cat!
He brought along as said a huge sack (100kg) of really nice quality sinking and floating farm made pellets (50kg of each), and a cute little Juvi "juruense" catfish.

Nice little guy, he is in my quarantine at the moment. (fish, not the guy lol)

Here's a couple of photos: (he is 10cm in length)
