Get to pick up my baby red Oscars on saturday can't wait!!

Awesome :) iv had 3 in the past. 2 tigers and an albino tiger. Not all at the same time obviously lol they make great wet pets

What tank are they going into? Tank mates?

Yay ! nothing like an oscar, although I see you say oscarS I hope you know what your letting yourself in for :)

I agree with that lol

Also Star4 could you have a quick look at my thread about my flowerhorn in the emergency section please. The thread is called "need some advice on my flowerhorn". I'd love to have your opinion on the matter :)

Thanks

Yeah I'm only having two I've got a Goldan cloud pleco that's already in the tank.

2 reds oooh eeer !! :). Just watch out when they get to aroung 6" and get their stroppy side on, keep a filter mature and handy to set up another tank just in case they suddenly take a dislike to each other!. Love tigers myself.

Good luck with them! You will not be dissapointed in the interaction and personality of these fish. They are absolutely wonderful and have more in common with a dog than a fish. But as Star said, when they hit about 6 inches (teenagers) they may turn to hate each other. But on a lighter note, things to look forward to: THem greeting you at the glass when you get home, wiggling their bodies in hapiness to see you, eating tasty treats from your hand (may have to teach them to but they eventually will when they are completely comfortable with you) and the enver ending drama. And by drama, I mean them getting mad and acting like they are dying because you changed the water, added a new ornament, went in the tank to scoop extra food out, oh and of course, just being late from work lol

When you do get them, do not be alarmed. After you acclimate them, they will probably spend a few days laying on the bottom of the tank.It is very normal for an oscar to do that in a new environment. It is also what they will do with the aformentioned events. The famous oscar sulk.

Haha will do, I've heard about people saying there like a dog looking forward to teaching them to eat out of my hand. Is there any other tank mates that I can put in with oscars?

Word of advice re your heater, get a good strong one, with a guard and as many suckers as you can get on it, also some of those airline suckers to stick the lead to the glass. One of my oscars is an absolute monster for smashing heaters, I have had to hide his behind a huge rock so he cant get at it, so he regularly takes the filter spray bar apart or moves the intake pipework.

Oscar tank mates will purely depend on the oscar, I fostered one a sweetheart she was and I put 2" baby severums in with her and she didnt bat an eye at them she was so placid. It is very hit and miss advising on what fish go with an oscar because at the end of the day it will be the oscar that decides not you. I have seen pictures of an oscar with angel fish! it is just pot luck on the temperment of the oscar.

I always wanted a oscar when i found out about them before i got tropical fish but i am really thinking of getting small fish now like neons etc if i get my dream tank

Oh yes and they are always staaaaaarrrrrrrrvvvvvviiiiiingggg!!!

An oscar is a very long term commitment, it took me months of thought did I really want one, so glad I got one, Rusty is my pride and joy, a few weeks after getting him I was given another oscar!(which I still have as he has a broken jaw :( ) since then I have fostered 3 more for a while and two babies ended up on my doorstep (re-homed to a huge tank) once they get under your skin your hooked lol

It really depends on if you want fish just to look at... And that's it, or if you want a fish to look at and a fish that will interact with you :) I know what I'd prefer. Oscar all the way :)

Oscars are by far the best fish ive ever kept. Ive got a red(Doris) and a tiger(Pete) Doris used to lay eggs all the time and Pete would fertilize them but then my greedy fire eel would come gooble them up. Now Doris won't lay eggs any more and this makes Pete mad and he just couldn't play nice so I had to seperate them. They have huge personalities :good:

The other recommendation I can make is make sure you have really good filtration. They eat a lot and their poo when they are bigger is about the size of a twizzler (i know I have used that term before but its the only thing I can think of that compares lol) And just as star said, make sure you have a durable heater. The one I had in my tank was not made of glass as another member told me his glass one got smashed by his oscar, it electrocuted the oscar unfortunately, and almost electrocuted the member!
