does anyone know which are the best tankmates for oscars and which fish grow at a similar rate???

(NB. i am english so maybe limited on choice of fish!)

It depends on the size of the tank, in big tanks (150g or more) oscars can be used in large fish semi aggressive communities but in smaller tanks there can be territory issues so finding suitable tankmates becomes harder.

Why would being English limit your choice of fish? You just have to know which stores to go to and be prepared to travel and spend a bit more than you would normally and you can get just as many fish here in England as anywhere else in the non tropical climate world. Try using this site to find the fish you want http://www.tropicalfishfinder.co.uk/ , unless its extreemly rare somewhere will have it in stock.

I have had many fish with oscars and they have all lived happily together. what are you looking for? I have had anything from angels to a clown knife to large catfish.

im english, NO VARIETY IN FISH HERE!!! i bought the only blood parrots ive ever seen for £25!!
but i have a tank with 2 oscars, my brother works at an aquarium shop and he was given to tiny baby oscar orphans, we put them in a big rio 180, and now they are about 4-5 inches and weve had them about 2 months lol. they are in with

1x Green Terror ( good but teritorial faster grower than the oscars )

1x synodontis catfish ( nice and friendly )

2x Blood Parrots ( lovely fish in my opinion )

1x emerald cichlid ( related to oscars and chocolate cichlids )

1x frontosa cichlid ( male about 4" deveoping his nuchal hump )

and a nice spotted gar that is about 8 " but he is really peacefull and fu nto watch.

i have found oscars to be very friendly with most fish, there is also a tiny corydoras in there that nothing picks on, its a nice comunity tank and im sure oscars are good with just about any cichlid. also ive had knifefish and there good too.
hope that helps :)

wow dont gars grow huuuuge?!?!

and the frontosa is an african cichlid so requires totaly different water to your oscars and parrots.

and i hate sayin this but the tanks too small.

2 oscars alone need 100Gallons.

i am aware lol, my gar im growing big then selling him as he was given to me for that reason, and atm the tank is perfect coz the fish are all around 3" gar as an exeption,
i know quiet alot about fish and have been an aquarist for 5 years, and my lfs told me that a frontosa isnt very piccy about its water conditions as i used to have tangynikan tank.
thanks for telling me about the oscars out growing the tank though :)

my cichlid tank ( other one ) is at chaos !!! the two juwels are defending there eggs and keep having a teritirial " tug of war " match with the convict and nicaraguensis witch have laid eggs also. at the moment there isnt too much aggression , is it possible to move the parents and eggs to anotehr tank ??? eithout the fry being killed ?

+

:p what strange the fry will be!!
