Open Top Tanks

What are the main advantages or disadvantages people with open top tanks have experienced?

I have a very limited amount of experience with open topped tanks, but my oscar lived in one for about 10 days and I did notice how much water was lost through evaporation; I was having to top up a half gallon or so every day or two (in a 240l).

Certain fish can jump out, water evaporation, mineral build up, water spots on wall, water splashes on floor if too full, pets might fall in or swipe at the fish, dust, dirt, hair, bugs go in the tank. I can only imagine this as I've never actually gone topless
