Aw Zoe, bad luck. The only consolation though is that it did happen quite quickly and at least you didn't have to do it yourself. Be consoled in the fact that you tried everything . RIP little fishie

Frankly, I have not been very good at euthanasia and have always been very relieved when the end was quick and from natural causes.

thank you. the girls dont really seem to have noticed shes not there, but to me the tank looks really empty without her

Sorry your betta died :rip:

Hopefully the USEFUL information might help in a similar situation in the future. I would keep some anti-bacterial meds and some epsom salts in as part of your emergency toolkit, so you can start treatment if appropriate as soon as possible. I know i'll be looking for some salts to get in for myself.

yeah i have ordered some was about the only thing i dont have!

i'm sorry for your loss... :( one of my favorite bettas died of dropsy too.... it's horrid to watch while you try your best to save their little lives.

and while i am a bit late, i'm sorry for the :grr: who's been arguing with you about your fish. stuff happens- even to the best fish keepers

It actual fact it can happen over night and did! I watch my fish for at least half an hour a day and check them at every feed. I have found many sources that also state that it can happen over night.

Please take some responsibility for your mistake and stop making up stories. If pineconing happens overnight without prior warning then why the hell are they selling Maracyn2 to treat dropsy??? Can you grasp that concept???

Why don't you just go out and buy another "prettier" one and be done with it? Why post here to cover up your negligence?

you are such an arse. who the hell do you think you are talking to someone like that. you need to grow up and learn to show some respect to people who are in need of constructive advice, not kicked in the teeth when they are down.
this forum has to be the worst bitching site i have ever seen. will someone please ban me as i'm sick and tired of reading such pathetic drivel

Maracyn 2 "may" work but how many times have you bought something for a specific problem and it didn't work, I believe in the old days there was a term for "quack" declaration of what a product would do.

1. you need to identify dropsy before the pine cone effect and maybe if you catch it then Maracyn2 will work, but as we all know you normally don't notice a problem with the fish until the condition is "visible" by which time the internal organs of the fish are in a dangerous condition and ergo untreatable.

2. all Maracyn packaging gives a "wide" range of declarations as to what it will cure, but basically it is like any other medication (Pimafix, Melafix which we can get in the UK) it is a general medication with effect on general bacterial problems. Unlike some of the dip medication which is most effective for external "visible" problems on the fish.

3. many fish keepers have had in their life at least one fish die from an "unknown" problem, which could be down to the fish having contracted a pathogen whilst not in the fishkeepers hands, so blame cannot be assigned at the location of its death.
Please do not be so crude and insensitive as to blame Zoe for a fish dying in her hands.

4. you are an extremely lucky person not to have had a fish die of dropsy whilst in your care, but are you saying you have never lost a fish, you have never turned on the tank light and found a "floater" in the tank, if your answer is yes then you have been extremely fortunate.

I really think that this issue should be locked off now as it is not resolving poor Zoe's problem and especially as the fish has now passed on. No real benefit is being accrued by DOGFOOD's comments.
