I got to a Church for a fair they are having where they sell all sorts of things. Today I see this guy selling "portable" betta blocks, the newest "fad" in the pet world.
It's a flat, glass box with a betta and some gravel, stuffed in a cardboard box with a handle so you carry you pet everywhere, that's it, and for $25.00, for that in the pet sore you can get a fancy male betta and a 2 gallon tank! Only a tiny opening was on top and they were all being kept in the sunlight which is around 85 F now frying them. The bettas were either red or blue, and all were young males whom had not grown up fully and this was bad enough for their size! You cant even clean the tank and to get the betta out or in you must dump him//her in a hole!

The sales guy was like "get your beautiful beta fish, "not betta", the perfect pet for kids and adults, so easy to care for all you do is change the water every 4-6 weeks and drop a pellet it once every few days, and your friends will say WOW when you carry your gorgeous pet around with this convenient cardboard carrying case". I couldnt believe how stupid people are thinking this is humane or cool, with all the info on bettas available. One person said they loved bettas but they had so many because they just died on her, no wonder if you have them in a glass box!

They sell them at Flower shops too now as gifts you can get shipped to your house/office. Just like a Bouquet of flowers I bet they all will die soon after purchase unless you put them in a real tank.

I should go back and take pictures of this!

so sad. Here is what one looked like.

and here is their site, can you believe their slogan, what BS! http://www.bettablocks.com/

Just reading this makes me feel cross :grr: I hate it how some vendors take advantage of peoples ignorance. If it was me I would phone up an animal welfare charity, although that wouldn't do any good either because animal welfare charities don't seem to give a darn about aquatic life. And if the do care its only about whales, dolphins or coral reefs.

very sad indeed :(

shame big animal welfare societies dont really care about fish i do know of a person around where i live that does actually take fish that people dont want and cant care for anymore and rehomes them to better places for free shows there is a few people out there who want to help i would love to do somethign like that when i get my own house

i beleive someone on this forum is doing something similar to

Ash

I would LOVE to do that help sick bettas and find them homes, but around here there are too many bettas and so few GOOD homes.

The worst part is that the Bettas will probably survive in that block thing, making people believe that its happy and healthy. If I had lots of tanks I would re-home all fish that needed re-homing.

All the bettas had closed fins, were discolored, and half of them were lying on the bottom. A healthy male betta would be colorful, swimming around, flaring, and possibly have a bubblenest. These bettas were sick and stressed.
If someone knew the signs, they would realize these are not happy bettas. If I had room I would have gotten 1 and put it in a large tank, but I have 2 very happy bettas and thats my limit.

id have stood there for a while telling people who came up what the real deal was, short of punching him :good:

haha haha wow like anyones going to by the bettas even the pics show them dieing hahahah WHAT A FAIL

its a bloody drilled glass
building brick what they
use for making shower cubicles
how can anyone get away with this
is barbaric i wonder what the RSPCA
think about it

The RSPCA are terrible with things like that. They are with birds too.

They also won't do anything about a mistreated dog if they can see it has water, food and no obvious signs of abuse (and I mean extream ones like a broken leg or pouring blood.

a few years ago i was sat in my car with the dog
all the windows open dog had water and aslo had a sheet
over the back of the car and some one laid me in to the RSPCA
for having a dog in a car on a hot day this makes my blood boil
other time they jump to take my dog of me and when something like this happens
nothing is done this makes me mad !"££$%$£""!!"£$$***665£$$^%^*((+__)()*(*&&^^%$%

That's ridiculous. I do honestly believe that anyone that wants to keep any animal should have a license to prove that they are capable of being able to care for that animal. Yes it would probably completely destroy the pet keeping industry as we know it but it would stop stuff like this from happening.

I can see them being okay for temporary housing, but not as living quarters. I used to keep bettas in bowls years ago, but not anymore. They look so sad in them.
