Omg Overstock!

I went over a co-workers house today, she has been asking me for advice about her tank, stocking etc....she told me that she wants to add a few more fish but wasn't sure what would be compatible with her current stock - "because they just get along 'so nicely' " - also, she couldn't remember exactly what she had so she asked me to come by to see if I recognized any of her fish -
oh.....my......god.

she has a ten gallon tank with ---- brace yourselves ----- 4 pearl gouramis (three of which are males with blazing red throats), 2 blue gouramis, 4 kribensis (all female thankfully), 7 neon tetras, 2 peppered corydoras and two other corydoras who were the same size/shape of the peppereds but mostly a brown/gray color, and a balloon molly.


I tried to tell her that she is MASSIVELY overstocked and needed to rehome ATLEAST the kirbensis, blue gouramis, and atleast two male gouramis....and she said I was just saying that because I wanted to take her fish.


ugh how can people be so dense - plus she still wants to add more fish!!! she kept talking about a "pretty yellow fish" that she saw - she kept describing it so I brought her to google and pulled up a picture of an electric yellow lab cichlid and she goes - "oh! thats it! aren't they lovely?" - I showed her how large of a tank most sites say they need and she said "oh pish posh! I only want one not a whole school!!!"




any one else frustrated???

Some people will never understand their tank's limits, and most of them won't listen to anyone except the LFS down the street that keeps telling them that they could fit another one in. These people are called fish hoarders, and it should be illegal.

same thing happened when i saw atrocity happen at petsmart, the lady was buying goldfish for her 5 gallon tank. i said that she should go with a betta, some shrimps and ember tetras but she ignored me because i didnt work there and therfore "unknowlegable" about fish. even after i told her about my tank and some of the apparently (just found out) fragile fish i keep.

it does get annoying and people are like this all the time, just promise her you wont take the fish with you as long as she doesnt want that to happen, and that she just take your advice.

which will sound bad for her as she needs to return 3 pearls,both blues, 2 kribs.

then she needs to add at least 3 more mollies and maybe +1 to the cory shoal

People are so ignorant. One of the reasons I hate people too. Ugh, irritates me to death. And I can't believe that she has that many fish in the tank! I'm surprised that they haven't ripped each other to shreads!

apparently (according to her) the last fish she added was the kribesis in the end of the summer....and she hasn't lost a fish since....insane anyone???

I suspect a lot was added more recently than that.
Perhaps do a test of her water, see just how bad things are?

People like these need easing in gently. Point them to some websites to look up info, and soon they realise themselves just how badly stocked they are.

Telling someone point blank to their face how overstocked they are usually gets backs up, and digging in of heels.

People are always more willing to do things if you make them believe they discovered the problems!

im usless with names but even 1 gold fish it too much or the tank however she doesnt listen
on the positive i tested her tank when i was home from uni and water was safe levels the cheap filter doing well


although in a every tank is over crowded fish live in open water not tanks just some people are ridiculous yes

My tank is overstocked too, but at least I am aware of it and I have fairly small fish in the same size range.

This thread subject is obviously close to all our hearts, but I have to say this...those poor goldfish, Tom! They really need to be in a 60 gallon tank and I bet your mum wouldn't listen to any advice you could give her. Such a shame

i have the same tank as her for a spare ive tryed to give her to spred the fish i no its still to small but its better than what she has now but wouldnt listen
i cant take her fish as only only have one tank 64litre still too small for them! and i have it set up with tropical fish
