Omg Ammonia In My Tap Water!

It should take care of the ammonia while the filter plays catchup. Maybe you fishie had a moment. I have 1ppm of ammonia in my water so I use prime. When you change your water, maybe do smaller more frequent water changes to avoid high doses of ammonia to the tank

If it's suddenly started from use of your hot tap and the cold water is ok then you have probably had something fall in to your header tank and die. Rat, mouse, perhaps even a bird in your loft (if that's where the header tank is). You could do a water change in the header tank and cistern by turning off your water supply and running the hot water until everything is drained out (turn off water heating if you do this) then look in your header tank for the offending article. Expensive if you are on a water meter though.

Yeah I was thinking or maybe doing small ones for a week or so? I have to say most of my other fish seem ok (one of my Pygmy Corys was flicking herself in the sand earlier) so I don't think the problem is bad bad,just that GBRs are that bit more sensitive than the others. Fingers crossed hey!

Aha, thanks. I had no clue what to do if it was a case of dead thing in the tank. What a nightmare!

There's no way you can say that it is over the legal limit, first of all you're guessing, second of all the test kit isn't accurate or precise enough.

Check your hot water tank, it should be covered because crap can and will find its way in there and rot.

Not sure what point you're making there, SBS, but the legal limit in the UK for ammonia in mains water is indeed 0.5ppm. All water companies must regularly test their water against dozens of parameters, etc., and publish the results. These results are contextualised by displaying the legal max result alongside.

The water companies use accurate equipment for testing ammonia concentration, here the OP has taken a sample of water added the reagent and then guessed the result with no card for comparison, that's no ground for a decent argument at all.

I'm not arguing that the legal limit is not 0.5Mg/L, I'm saying that there is no way the OP's sample can be declared over the legal limit by guessing the concentration and by using a hobby test kit.

Edit: The legal limit for ammonia in tap water is 0.50 ppm if I remember correctly, twinklecaz.
