I just traded one of 29 gallon set up (everything except fish and decorations) for a 55 gallon acrylic tank and a few boxes of "fish stuff". I am ecstatic just for the tank. I ordered a stand which will get here next week.

In one of the boxes are three old filters, all hobs. The first was pretty big, but the motor was shot. The second technically worked, but the magnet driven impeller rattled horrible and the intake tube basically crumbled under handling. It is the last one that has me curious. It is still in the box, with the manual, and the impeller and tubes are still sealed in plastic.

Do you guys think I should use it? Not on the 55 gallon (only 150 GPH), but maybe on one of my smaller tanks?

I guess I'm just not sure if it would last very long, or something like that? I have gotten almost all of my filters new. I also haven't seen this brand before (I assume they are no longer in the business).

I’d give it a try and see how it does. It could always be used as a backup filter. :)

That is a good idea. So long as it isn't atrociously loud I'll keep it around. I just found it a bit odd. Unopened for longer than I have been alive. Box reads 1986.

I'm not a fan of cartridge type HOB's and I'm uncertain if the Tetra Whisper filter cartridges are still available. But you could modify to replace the cartridge with a piece of filter sponge.
It's apparently new/unused so give it a go and see what happens. Bear in mind that it's rated for a 10-20g so it's not a good filter for the 55g.
