Oh Not Again

Ok yesterday i asked my mum to get me 3 Dwarf Rainbowfish and the pet shop (Swallows Aquatics) didnt know what she was on about so they gave her Australian Rainbowfish?? and on closer inspection they had white poo and ripped fins (Im guessing f-ing Parasites yet again!!!) now today 1 is dead and 1 is really skinny so im gonna take them back 2morra and try and get the right fish.. So what i want to know is do these "Dwarf Rainbowfish" have any other name, Ive heard of neon rainbowfish are they the same thing? and as for these bloody Parasites ive just had enough why dont they just go away and die arghhhh

IMO these guys take forever to find and young ones are especially susceptible to disease.
(took me 4 months to find my current 6!)

O.K. Candice, when you purchase new fish, you should always quarantine them for (1) week in a separate tank. That way if they are sick they won't contaminate any of your other tanks. And on top of that, you shouldn't add more than three fish at a time. Wait (1) week before adding any more. Fish don't like change, much like you and I...lol

Be careful where you buy your fish. Most fish are in a lot of stress in pet stores so quarantining is the best thing you can do for yourself, and the fish.

Thank Youu soo much!!! tbh im thinking about giving up with the rainbowfish and just getting a Krib much easier... i know u shouldnt add 3 fish at 1 time but as i had taken out my large pleco the day before i thought it wouldnt really effect anything.. ohh yeah one more thing im totally rescaping my tank this week lots of planting and stuff so im gonna need to move the substrate out is there a special way of doing this? as i know it houses alot of benifical bacteria its gonna be going back in the tank after ive putin the (JBL Aquabasis plus) stuff..

That's gonna be too much change for the fish that are already in there, but it's your tank. You will probably end up with more sick fish. Remember, you need to do very subtle changes so as not to freak your fish out.

1 week quarentine is useless - 3-4 weeks minimum to allow fish to get over the stress and for any disease to show.

THe other lesson to learn is RESEARCH first then purchase...

Also not everyone has a quarantine tank (myself included) due to $$$ and space.

Just to add, not sure exactly what fish you were looking for but I have "Dwarf Neon Rainbows", google image search for that name brings up pictures of my fish. If that is what you are looking for then they are available in the UK. I got mine from Maidenhead Aquatics.

No i dont have any patience nor do i plan ahead quiet frankly if i want something im gonna get it Simple as and for the record i do own a "quarentine tank" but its currently housing molly fry, So before you jump to conclusions maybe u should give me the time to reply Ok? Thank you bushbrother as u correctly pointed out not everyone can afford these extra tanks,heaters,lights,filters also isnt this forum supposed to be a nice helpful place? at the end of the day if i wanna move my tank around,buy new fish etc then its my decision i dont need a rule book my fish are perfectly fine thank you very much ...

Being a public forum, you have to take everything with a grain of salt.

Fishkeeping isn't for those without patience. It takes a great deal of patience to get your tank ready for fish. It's really alot of work keeping your tank up.

anyway IMO i think you should put the fih on hold at the store and move the tank then get your rainbows

and drobbyb is right, it does take patience.

as long as the gravel is not let out to dry and retured to the water ithin an 2 our time fram it sould be fine.

Now, don't be too hard on her.... I'm exactly the same way. My Mom won't allow me to get a quarantine tank, because it's just, like, a useless waste of space.... Or, or something along those lines. I'm trying *very* hard to be patient and perhaps wait until the new year to breed my Bettas, because I will (hopefully) get my microworm culture on the 17th but I don't wanna wait for that; also, I need to get tanks for the breeding male & female to live in afterwards.... It's really very complicated. ^^; Haha, but, yeah; I'm exactly the same way, and have been yelled at many times on here for saying stuff or something. Try not to be too flippant, CandyCoated.... It just ruins your reputation around here.

I wasnt trying to offend anyone if i did then im Sorry!! Anyhow the rainbows went back and i got a Krib instead which is really beautiful i also got rid of my Molly fry which was really hard as ive raised them from birth i understand there are certain ways of doing things but i Hate all the waiting. Does anyone here know how the hell im supposed to rinse baby brine shrimp?? this is the first time ive brought live food and it says "please rinse well" totally confused!!.
