Oh My GOD I got an ALTUM!

I suspect that my altum died and my friends at the pet store might being trying to pass off a scalare in his place. :*) I might be wrong but that fish looks really diffrent. He is smaller than he was and is not as pretty. But I know that the people at the fish store where just trying to not hurt my feelings seeing how excited I was about getting one.

just don't let them make you pay $34 bucks for a scalare. they may be being considerate, but that's still a chunk of change for a common baby angel.

Ya I will probably get two wild juvinile scalares if the so called altum looks still the way it did when I last saw it.

Thi isn't totally on topic, but its about Altums. I was at a fish shop in my home town, about 3 hrs from where i live now and they had Altums for $14.99 Canadian! Im not sure if they were true altums or scalares trying to be passed off as altums, i didn't look closely enough. BUt i might this weekend. Id buy some if i had the tank room..

I have my Altum tank up and runnning now... It is a 44 gallon. It is 25 inches deep and each of the back sides are 26 inches long. The three front sides are 13 inches each. It is one of those corner tanks. I have a betta cycling it now. I also have some anachris in it too. The substrate is black sand which first clouded the water a little bit even though I rinsed it like three times. But now the water is clear and the betta is eating. All I need is some Nitromax. Nitromax if you are woundering is live bartierea bottled up and frozen. You just introduce the bacterea slowly and presto instant cycled tank. :)

Hey Claire,

3 times for black sand probably isn't enough. I remember rinsing my first batch of black sand constantly for 45 minutes and it was still reasonably cloudy. It might be worth water changing some of that water out to get the cloudiness down.

I've never heard of Nitromax, but, Altums are said to be very delicate (if it is an altum, was it ever discovered what sort of angel it is?) and I would assume that if you didn't have a test kit, you will be on the back foot constantly throughout it's life. Do you know what the current params are?

Also, there is no need to add a betta to a cycling tank if you are planning to use a product to "instantly cycle" the tank. If the tank will instantly cycle, there is no need to put a betta through it's current discomfort.

Good Luck with your Altum. How come you haven't seen it for a couple of weeks if it's at the store where you work?

Keep those params good!

They are cutting back on work time because it is kind of slow in the late summer because all the people are busy with out door things to play attention to fish stuff. But now that it is getting colder I can work now. Also I am starting to see the altumness in the Altum I have. He is picking on the other fish and all the tadpol bite marks have healed.

Oh right, what is happening with the Betta?

Oh the little bugger is thriving! :) He eats like a lion that has not been fed in days! I feel so bad because I know that he was in a small little jar and fed once a week but now he has a tank all to him self for a little while. ;) I have decided to move the anachris over to one side of the tank to make room for the bog wood pieces that will soon be coming. I have thought long and hard about the design of this tank and I think some large pieces of bog wood in the center forming nice holes and gaps for the Altums to swim around and through. Several vellesneria will be placed around the pieces of bogwood. I also am going to move my dwarf lily into the Altum tank because it is having a hard time getting any light because of that blasted Sword that is simply become a monster! :/ I trim and prim that stupid sword and it seems to grow even more quickly than ever! I would put it in the altum tank but It would mess up the aqua scape in my 20! Oh well. Also what other long stemed plants could I put in that Altum tank? I can't put a onion plant because it would sufficate the other plants and not to mention the fish! It would also grow far to large for that 44! I would love some planting and aqua scaping tips! ;) B)

Don't you have another (healthy, cycled) tank Kopix Nation? If you have a cycled tank, just run the altum's filter on a mature tank for a week and then put the filter back in the altum tank along with a few fish and the tank will be fully cycled. The good bacteria in the cycled tank will have colonised the altum's filter and then you can put the filter back in the altum tank. You add a few fish at the same time as, if you don't, the bacteria will begin to starve due to lack of an ammonia source. Most 'instant cycle' products don't work anyway and cycling with fish is unecessary and slow. I haven't cycled a tank since my first one. It's just so much simpler to clone existing tanks.
