Hi,

Looking into my tank this evening I noticed that on one side of my gold sucking loach is a small raised area, not large enough to be a lump but definitely something underneath the skin and round and pink/purple in colour. Appreciate that the pic is a little fuzzy but I think you can make out what i've spotted.

Any ideas?

TT.

Does it look hard or soft the lump beneath the skin.

Really hard to say.

But I would say soft.

Ok.
Has the lump just suddenly appeared.
All you can do is issolate and try a bacterial med.
Have you noticed him going to the toilet if so what does it look like.
Does he look abit on the thin side to you or bloated.
Pics can be abit deceiving.

Looking at him now I would say his whole stomach is looking quite bloated. He's also being quite lethargic and not racing round the tank like he usually does when I peer into the tank - although he can certainly swim still. Haven't seen him go to the toilet yet.

Any brand of med you recommend?

Need more info on size of tank in gallons.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Are scales sticking out.
Can he maintain his balance in the water.
For bloating usually epson salt baths to help draw the fluids out and a bacterial med in issolation.
What do you feed the fish.

OK. See sig for tank size and tank mates. No scales sticking out as per dropsy. He does seem to be resting a lot on the top of one of the ornaments so not sure if that's down to a balance issue.

I do have some Epsom Salts. Rough guide to dosing a 58 gallon tank? Are they going to be a problem with any of my other fish?

Not going to be possible to isolate to treat with meds btw. =(

Stats:
ph: 7.6
Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrate: <5ppm (somewhere between 0 and 5)
Nitrite: 0ppm

I would do epson salt baths rather than adding to a tank full of fish
Usually its one teaspoon to a gal.
Resting to onside can be a sign of a bacterial infection.
Its up to you if you add the med to the whole tank.
Good Luck.

accidentally came accross a post on another fish forum (yes i was on another forum lol) and a sailfin molly had same as your loach. it was sugested that it may be an encysted parasite causing inflamation. heres the link maybe worth keeping an eye on the posts there if you cant find any solution there may be one on there.

Thats why I asked if he was thin or bloated.
What it looked like when he went to the toilet as I was checking internal parasites out if he had them.

Signs of internal parasites are.
Long stringy white poo, or clear mucas poo.
Worms prutruding from the anus.
Enlarged anus or red and inflamed anus.
Being thin or bloated.
Bent spine sometimes.
Sunken in belly,.

sorry just remembered seeing this post then came accross same problem and trying to help...will butt out next time lol

also you said internal, post was for external

Wasn't having ago glad you posted always best to cover every angle.

OK. Last night I put some shelled peas in the tank. Most still there this morning so that suggests he didn't go for them.

He was looking no better/no worse this morning so I have given him an Epsom salt bath in a bucket full of water from the tank for 20 mins. I fear I may have put in 1 teaspoon more than I should have though. I'm such an idiot.

Haven't got any meds as yet but yes, I will have to treat the whole tank if I go down that route.

TT.

Even though you added abit more salt it should be fine.
Has the bloating gone down.
