Hi I am new to this forum and to keeping Cichlids. I have a male Blue Acara whi is 3.5 inches. Today while watching the tank I noticed that he was fulttering the front of his dorsal fin up and down quickly, like a twitch and following my female Nic (similar size) around the tank. The Nic had been going into one of the caves, getting a mouthfull of gravel and spitting it out about 5cm away from the cave entrance!

They do not fight with each other, and when I bought the Nic from the lfs I was told they wouldn't cross breed. I am a little conserned about this behaviour, does anyone know what it is?

Sounds the same as when my Keyholes try getting jiggy.

when my blue acara started to spawn the male and sometimes female would shake plants to show how strong they were. They would lip lock too. The color change was amazing they were such a bright blue really pretty. The male would go where ever the male went along the way he would try and make a nest by digging sand. They would clean a rock and then you knew it would be do time.

Yours could have paried up but they are such differant fish I don't think any thing will come of their love. But its nice that they seem to have a buddy. I does not really sound like they are going to spawn but it sound like they could be a pair OR the male is trying to show he is the top fish and your Nic just does not want to fight about it.

Cichlids are funny fish.

Nics are CA and Blue Acaras are SA so don't worry you won't get any cross breeding/hybrids.
