hi i tried setting up a diy co2 kit for my tank it went horribly wrong my mum went crazy! :(
i set up the diy co2 before i went to bed at 10.30pm lights were on for only another half an hour but thne when i woke up today sunday at 8.00am i went downstairs to find this really horrible stench! the 2ltr bottle half filled was full of bubbles till the top and there was the yeast and sugar mixture leaking everywhere! i tried to mum it up b4 my mum saw but inevitably she saw it and there was fireworks.
so know im thinking off stripping down my aquaqube puttin some pebles in there with soem goldfish and plastic plants.
its my only other option cuz ive spent all the money ive saved up for in the past year on this set up and if i dont have co2 all my plants will die and i kno my 20 pounds worth of glosso will be the first to that fate.
so basically all im asking is i anyone has a nutrafin cannister the i canhave just a cannister and nothing else i already have a nano diffuser if not then my plants will dye and ive jsut lost 200 pounds :( except the 50 pounds i payed for tank so i lost 150 pounds atthe age of 14 :(
plzplzplzplzplzplz can anyone post me a free nutrafin cannister if so pm ill pm u my address if not then i will strip down my tank

Why did it leak though? Providing you did not have any blockages in the airline (or that you didn't have a one-way valve in the wrong way round) I'm really stuck what would have leaked, did you seal the airline into the bottle lid with aquarium sealant and leave it to set for at least 48-hours before adding sugar, yeast and water?

Those pop-bottles can take a massive amount of pressure before leaking so I am guessing something must not have been sealed correctly for that to happen, if it is sealed correctly I would have thought the mess would have ended up in the tank?

i didnt seal the lid i read tha if you poke a hole then push the aorline through with pliers then u wont need to use sealant so i did that and there was no gaps still it leaked

Ahh. It is better sealed, if you use a ceramic diffuser then the pressure build-up is probably enough to push the airline out and/or leak from around the hole where the airline goes through. I used sealant on my t-joint between two cannisters and it still blew them apart, I have now sealed and taped them just to make sure!

yes but now my mum doesnt trust me with diy co2 and i cant by a nutrafin kit so thats y i need the free cannister

I have 2 bottles linked together but I'm not using sealant. I think one bottle has stopped producing CO2 though. I might just look into getting some silicone... ;)

Sorryto hear it went wrong mate :( Perhaps you can store the bottle in a large bucket untill you're comfortable its not going to leak?

The problem is always either filing up with too much water or yeast or sugar.

Even if there was a leak somewhere you wouldn't have huge puddles if the mix was right, just a little bit of leakage that a cloth would clean up, no mops needed.

I have always said get a bottle lid.
Poke a hole through it with a bradawl or other sharp object.
Widen both sides with a philips screwdriver.
Push an airline connector through a correctly size washer and then through the hole.
Find a Nut that will screw tightly onto airline connector (inside the lid)
Seal the outside covering the washer and bottom of the hose connector entirely.

Leave for 2 days (I left for 2 hours and had no problems but there you go)

Mix was 1 cup (not mug of sugar)
1¼ PROPERLY MEASURED teaspoon (from a bread machine or siilar will do)
Water to just above where the bottle starts to bend into the neck.

Andy

Use a t-juntion on the airline which has three airline tube connection points. One bottle to one end, second bottle to other, third t-junction connector goes to diffuser/ladder.
