It was just a sad sight. Even my sister, who knows nothing about fish, could tell they weren't right. ( I did teach my sister how to do water changes...nitrite spike after adding new fish) Something had to be done. You go to jail if you abuse a dog or cat. I just don't understand why fish do not get the same respect.

How depressing that people think that way. I cannot cuddle my fish but my betta comes to my hands, as do the majority of my platys and swordtails. My malawis let me touch them, and will eat out of my hand. All of my fish, including my evil psycopath jewel, greet me at the glass when I go near their tanks. Oh and the bettas on my nightstand dance for me before I go to bed. And this is not enough personality to be a true pet?

Unfortunately if its not fluffy, furry or cuddly then for many it is not. There is also a lot of myths surrounding fish, such as not feeling pain or only having 3 second memory.

Not feeling pain......
I had a male Mickey Mouse Platy, and a Velvet Wag Female Platy. (both now dead)

The MM Platy (male) never left the side of the velvet wag. Was her soulmate. He watched over her when she was in labor and kept the others from harassing her, and they were always together. Stuck together at the hip almost. She died and he was never right. Quit eating, spent all of his time in hiding. He died a week later. (All water parameters were good, pH 7.6 Ammonia/Nitrite 0, Nitrate 20-30)

Let someone tell me that fish are emotionless animals with small memory that dont feel pain.

The same thing is happening to me with my 2 MALE swordtails very odd but last week 1 of my original tankmates a marigold wag swordtail died. Ever since then my pineapple swordtail hasn't been the same they seemed to be playful towards each other and even "bully" each other I say that in quotes because it was playful bullying then he died and as we speak I am watching my pineapple just sit on the bottom of my tank slowly losing him life still breathing but getting slower by the hour and not moving. He came to the top at feeding time but had to struggle. He ate 2 or 3 flakes then stopped swimming ANC just sunk to the bottom. He laid on his side and didn't even bother getting up. He seems very sad. I believe fishes do have memory's and emotions and nobody can tell me otherwise. I feel for you DM as this is now happening to me.

It was hard to watch. I did daily water changes for a week thinking I had done something wrong, or that the tank wasnt right. I think that with the loss of his girl, he just lost the will to go on without her.

That's how I feel about my swordtail but unfortunately everybody has some reason to live and sometimes people just lose it and let themselves go same for humans.

Witnessing these types of emotions in fish make me wish that there were federal laws about fish keeping. People go to jail for abusing dogs and cats, but what about keeping fish

Those poor parrots, the snails on the opposite side that were laying at the bottom of the tank, or even the crab tank at the bottom, where half of them were dead and were being picked at by the desperately hungry fish.

That small aquatic section was a travesty, and I want to shove the idiots that take care of them into a tank of their own and see how they like the neglect. I seriously wanted to buy every single fish in that store to save them, even though I knew chances were each of them would die in my care regardless.

He said he was going to look into it and get their aquatic expert involved. I will go back and look in a week and see how things are looking....
