Ive got a tank to use as a hospital for my fin rot cory. But actually i ended up adding the medicine to the main tank coz it was looking in pain and wasnt swimming properly, so did it yesterday. Anyway got this new tank (Juwel Rekord 60), and wondered if i could use it as a nursery or not? The fry will be born in the next week or so, and the filter has mature media in it, but obviously being form someone else tank (and fish) they may not be 'clean' so to speak.

so what should i do? Im assuming i cant just take some of the water in the main tank and put in the new tank, and hope for the best??? I want to do my best for the fry but theres so much advice everywhere- i dont have the time to sit down and read today! Just a plain and simple TELL ME WHAT TO DO would be really appreciated!!! :good: :D

You could always test the strength of the filter by adding ammonia and raising the count to 4-5ppm and then seeing where things stand (via a liquid test kit) in 12 hours time.

i wouldn't risk fry in a new tank, mature water or not, you'd need to leave that water fish free for a few weeks.

it would be worth asking in the relevant fish species forum, as there are breeders who can advise correctly x

To me, a simple statement of what to do seems hard because there are things to be said for either decision mentioned above. I agree with LJ above that at least getting a simple idea that the mature may be functioning properly is not very hard - simply dose it up to 4-5ppm for a day or two and watch to verify that it can drop both ammonia and nitrite(NO2) to zero ppm within 12 hours or less. Any good working biofilter should be able to do this and it if can then fresh tap water filtered by this filter should provide a good environment, possibly even for fry, depending on their sensitivity.

If you are not extremely set to necessarily want these fry then leaving them to fend for themselves in the main tank may be the better option, where nature will take its normal course. The water will indeed be a little more mature there and you may be able to provide some cover or protection.

Good luck with it! WD

I have noticed in another thread that your fry have been born. Simply moving over "mature water" will do nothing for the fry. Instead I would concentrate on making sure you do lots of regular large water changes on the fry tank and just let the filter in the tank mature along with the fry. I have taken this approach more than once with decent results. Don't forget to use a bucket for the water change so that you can return any escaping fry to the tank from the water change bucket.

Ok thanks - have changed the last two nights and stats are pretty good, so will keep doing that, and testing every day, just to be sure!
