Carrying on from my last post i had just convinced my dad that it is better to leave my tank on and get ammonia instead of doing a fish in cycle. He is annoyed that the tank has been on for weeks and using up electricity.

So what did i do?

I went to town today and visited

Boots
Robert Dyas
Super Drug
Wilkinsons
Savers
B&Q

Any ammonia that doesnt have foamy bubbles? NO!!!!!!

Is this stuff a myth i feel like i am wasting my time, very close to going cold water!

There is a link in my sig to it, here is a direct one.

Well we had a tank without a filter yeas ago the fish lived for about 6 years. also i got my partner a tank last christmas she did not cycle and all the fish are fine. So i dont know why cycling a cold water tank is essential?

Although the fish in the previous tanks were `fine` initially they could have suffered stress & permanent damage to their gills/bodies from the high levels of ammonia/nitrites & nitrates.

So you can look at cycling a tank in two ways. Essential or not, depending upon how you perceive the welfare of you fish/livestock.

well i only knew about cycling once i got my new tank for myself and i think it is essential!

It took me a number of trips to find the Ammonia, it does exist haha! Although my mum & a few shop assistant were skeptical. Tescos even tried to sell me 'Jeyes Fluid' had to show them a pic of a the White bottle/Red Top
Where I live we have 3 boots stores, and I ended up going to the largest of them and found it was tucked away in a corner with a few other household items :good:

I bought my household ammonia from Boots online, there were no problems and it was delivered in a few days.

MY AMMONIA IS COMING!

Watch this space so what do i do on the 23rd when it arrives? my tank is 48 ltr

The calculator at the bottom of the page linked below can be used to find out how much household ammonia you should put in to get it up to your desired level (usually 5ppm.)

Thanks so 2.5 ml is this a one off thing that i add?

You need to top the ammonia back up to 5ppm every time it falls. Over time it will begin to fall more rapidly as your bacteria will multiply.

A great place to read about fishless cycling is the cycling resource centre:

it took me about 6 days for the first drop to 0, then i re-dosed to 4ppm and started testing for nitrite, and it took about another week before this also dropped to 0. But obviously the time it takes for both o drop to zero after a re-dose gets quick and quicker.

Put the temp to 29C - optimum for the bacteria that you want to grow/multiply as fast as possible
