I was looking at what I thought were "massive" tanks the other day, and I realized something.
I know I use to think as a 90G as HUGE.
I was looking at 125G's yesterday, and I realized, they're not that huge afterall.
Even the 220G was considerably smaller than I thought.
I mean, they're still pretty big, but not huge.

Then I realized how the fishkeeping hobby is very expansive.
The 220G set (Tank, hood, lights, filters, heaters, ect) was on SALE for $900.
The stand was another $200 which is really chep, considering I spent $170 on my 55G stand, and the gravel would be pretty expansive, PLus the gravel and decore!
Plus the fish....
But also the larger tanks became more of a reality to me, I use to think only fish nutheads spent money HUGE tanks, but now I realized that its in my grasp if I really worked hard for it.

Has anyone else came to this conclusion, or one simillar to it?
Or am I just weird?

The tank is the biggest initial outlay, i dont think the maintanence and stocking of it is expensive.
I guess If your willing to spend an extra £100 - £200 at the start you can usually get a 'huge' tank.

I just went with what i had room for

I recently bought a 145UK gallon tank and now filled up doesnt seem as big as it was sat empty in the shop.

Thats a really cheap price what you quoted, mine was £1000 for tank and stand ($2000USD ish)

Buy one, they are cool!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would guess that the tank represents only about 25% of the total outlay on setting up, based on what many of my customers tell me.

look at 2nd hand - tanks are really cheap 2nd hand :)

our trigon 350 would have cost nearly £1200 with the bits we got - it was 8 months old... and we got it for £300 :)

That was with a fluval 304 external, with new filter pads and ceramics (about £40), complete set of filters for the jewul filter, enough gravel for it, ornaments, medications and test kits for stuff we've never tested for!

I can never find a tank here thats over 4foot... If i could find a bigger tank i would buy it so its prob best i never see any for sale here :/

try your local tip / dump ;)

there are always tanks at our local one (ok bare glass and in need of a clean)

yep - they are normally in a bit of a mess and need a good clean.
I've even seen them with lids and filters :) - again in a mess.

I'm keep meaning to keep checking but we moved away from it and its not local now :( - my dad lets me know if he see's any down there but i'm still waiting for a big one to turn up.

If he sees any of any size be sure he calls me first :p

Thats amazing :shifty: never of thought it... i wouldnt care if it was a mess, it would be a great "project", could make my own lid and oo oo to much to think of lol think my girlfriend mite kick my ass if i get another tank or "project" Spent to much time on the one i have now.

I also noticed how the 29G was bigger than I thought.
I thought it was a wee little tank, not much bigger than a 20G long.

i find anything over or near 100 is big. its a comfy size. big but not enormous. 90-180 is perfect sized. i thought 30 gallons was tiny

Yea that I have noticed too, and another good way to get it cheaper is DIY.
Anyway, today I'we been to the Prague zoo (only a short visit (3 hours)) and there were some really humongus tanks, like the on the2 polar bears used, and so on, but what really amazed me were the fishy ones. There was this 6000-10000 liter tank with about 20 oscars, some smaller cichlids a ray, and a green anaconda, and the oscars were absolutly huge, like about 35 cm long and 8 cm wide and 15 cm high, really monstrous fish, and there were a lot of aquariums from about 2000-8000 too, I will post some pics when I get em from the camera in the picture section, don't have any really good ones as the camera is crapish.

I use to think my 10G was big, back in the days before the forum.
Even alittle while after I joined the forum, I thought having two 10G's, a 5G, and 3 bettas was impressive.
