I just found out there is a chance im allergic (sp) to my dogs. I just assumed i had a 5 year cold or something. I have Always had cold like symptoms and most of the time i dont have a cold. I sneese like at leased 15 times a day. Im off to the docters to find out for sure so keep your fingers crossed for me. And whatever the results i cant get rid of my dogs.

ask your doctor if there is a needle or some pills you can take, maybe?

Hmm, I always blamed my stuffed nose and many sneezes a day on hay fever in spring and summer, and colds because of the weather changes during autumn and winter. Being allergic just never occurred to me.

Just believe what I believe and you'll be fine ;) I couldn't ever part with my animals if I turned out to be allergic to them, annoying as a stuffed nose and sneezing can be, it so isn't the end of the world.
There are however quite a few different types of drugs on the market against pet allergies, and some are said to work quite well. I know there was a thread on this forum about a year and a half ago or so of someone who found out he was allergic to cats but wanted to keep them. Some medication was recommended on there and it worked wonders for him. Just can't remember who it was :S

I have convinced myself its colds and hay fever, but i can get rid of my dogs, i going to ask for pills. I would rather take pills than get rid. Well I will have to wait a few days b4 i can see the docter. Will let you know what happens

There's hope for you, I'm allergic to my cats, you know sneezy, stuffy, itchy watery eyes, general misery. I found Allegra D works great for me (prescription only), I'm really sensitive to anything that causes drowsiness, but it doesn't bother me at all. I've also found that vacuuming and dusting frequently (live 2-3 times per week), changing the bedding once a week (or twice a week during shedding times), and keeping the cats brushed helps. I also change my furnace filter every three months and get the kind that are supposed to trap allergens. They also make products for pets (shampoos, wipes) that will help neutralize the dander. Lots of extra work, but well worth it to make your life a little less miserable.

I suffer from pet allergies as well, to both dogs and cats, same symptoms as dthoffsett. I also sing opera professionally and will not get rid of my two dogs and now 6 cats! I take non-prescription Claritin-D 24 hour, but I take the generic drug-store brand, which is the same thing essentially. It doesn't make me drowsy and gets rid of the congestion, so I can sing well I also dust 2-3x a week, mop at least once a week, change all linens (pet linen included) once a week, and bathe ALL pets once a month, in addition to brushing! Even the cats! It really cuts down on the dander when I do this, and they are oh, so yummy afterwards. Nothing like pets that run around smelling like lavendar. Basically, you have to keep a really, really, really tidy house and you should be fine. I would be concerned, however, if you experiened asma-like symptoms, or swelling.

Good luck, and let us know how things go.

Yeah one-a-day Cetirizine works for us (Sainsburys own brand were about £1 for 7 or £4 for 30). I love Sasha but if she's been on the bed (usually) or if I cuddle up to her with my bare skin, it's horrible.

i have two big dogs and a fat sheddy cat, and im allergic to them AND everything else in the world..like trees.. but i love them way too much to get rid of them, so i just take giant extra stength allergy pills.

the small ones dont work...

I suspect I might be allergic to mine (what am I not allergic to though?) but I won't even entertain that possibility. I just take a reactine a day, and go about my life. It works.

It can be easily managed, if you are found allergic to your animals. It's a little extra work on your part, but well worth it. I'm allergic to both cats and dogs (have 1 cat, 2 dogs) and have been involved in animal rescue for over 15 years. I just be sure to not let the cat lick my forehead anymore, but I can still love her up, as long as I wash my hands thoroughly afterwards. Dog allergies are nothing compared to cat allergies, for most people, according to my allergist. I can no longer have the dogs sleep in the bedroom, which is fine by me. I never allowed them to sleep on my bed anyways. I don't think that's healthy for them insofar as respecting my husband and I as alphas. Anyway, they'll tell you a bunch of things you can do. Ask for Allegra and Rhinocort. Don't bother with the allergy shots, which will take years to finalize. In my opinion, they are so not worth it.

same here.. ish. im getting a new job soon a a vet, and i hav two dogs and a cat, licking isnt the problem for me, its dander and after petting them if i touch my eyes they puff up! or if i get scratched i will get hives. but i love my animals and taking a pill is way better than getting rid of my pets. and i dont even mind swallowing large extra strength pills.

and im more allergic to my cat too, so she is NEVER allowed in my bedroom, but not that she cares, she likes her basment lair

When i sit and stuff my face into my cats fur my eyes get and nose get really itchy, every once in a while a stuffy nose occurs, but i just deal with it, its really no big deal. youll be ok! ^_^

Ugh. Just you guys talking about cats make me feel like I want to sneeze and itch! I'm highly allergic to cats also. My best friend has 4 kittens!

My husband is alergic to cats and he has just got me another kitten (after my last one past away last year) i don't let the kitten into our bedroom and i brush her reg, also hoover just before he comes home from work, the kitten loves my husband and as long as he can keep her away from his face he is not to bad, otherwise his eyes puff up and are really itchy, you should be able to get some pills that will help but even if you can't i bet you keep them lol i know i couldn't give up any of my pets lol
good luck

p.s leahzebelle lol i am glad i am not the only one who picks up her cat and rubs there face on the fur, my husband thinks i am tapped in the head lol
