Nitrite

Thanks for the info and the link - very interesting.

Well I did another 50% water change last night as my NitrItes were back up to .50 :( this morning its way down to not quite .25 - all other readings still normal and fish still looking happy and chilled :)

just got to stick with the waterchanges, it'll get there! :good:

Readings at 6pm tonight:

Amonia 0
NitrAte 20
PH 7.8
NitrIte .25

Do I need to do another water change or shall I wait for 24 hours and see if it changes? (last one was 50% yesterday)

if it were me I'd do another 25% or 50% change to see if you can clear it. might be worth checking the water in the tank about 10-15 mins after water change to see how much you've removed. a 50% water change wont necessarily remove half the nitrites!

OK

Did another 30% water change before going to bed last night!

3pm today readings:
Amonia 0
NitrAte 20
PH 7.8
NitrIte .25

6pm today
Amonia 0
NitrAte 20
Ph 7.8
NitrIte .50

Have just done a 65% water change - blimy my water meter will be spinning fast LOL

Fish look happy enough still thank goodness, although the black widow tetras seem to lose a bit of colour for a while after water changing - is this "normal"?

Ok so its now 4 hours after a 65% water change and my NitrIte test came out sky blue - but with 5 mins has started to turn a little darker - not quite .25 but not quite 0 either.

I did do a test, as advised, 15 mins after the water change and again 1 hour after the water change - they were both 0

More water changes? smaller ones? or keep on with the larger ones?

I do appreciate all your help :)

Oh NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

This morning my NitrItes have gone up to 1.0
And Amonia is up to 0.50

What now????????

I am getting concerned about it

Help please

ammonia and nitrite appearing are both normal in an uncycled tank with fish in. the more fish, the more waste, the more ammonia! ideally you want both ammonia and nitrite below 0.25ppm, so it's worth doing another reasonably large water change

doing lots of water changes or a few large water changes will keep your fish healthier (keeping the ammonia & nitrite below 0.25), but will make cycling the tank take a lot longer - you'll be doing frequent water changes for a while yet i'm afraid!

there's a guide somewhere on here about cycling with fish in, but I cant find it a sec - will try and find it asap

hth

the link in my sig 'whats cycling' will give some more guidance, but you just need to keep on with the daily water changes while you ride it out
