Newbie Advice

In the first week you would expect to see the rise in ammonia I think its usually 3 or so weeks before ammonia drops and nitrite rises - but now you have an ammonia source the bacteria will start to colonise. Just be sure to keep the levels below .25 via water changes :)

Just checking - you're using water conditioner now, right? Been reading the thread and you've had some great advice but I didn't se this mentioned again.

For water conditioner, don't just get the cheapest. Get one that removes chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals, and ideally on that states it locks ammonia into a safer form (you get ammonia from breaking down chloramine as well as from fish).

By a viking fighter did you mean a siamese fighter AKA betta splendens? These are not generally recommended for community tanks, especially not ones with cichlids like angel fish, fin-nippers like danios and aggressiv fish like sharks.

Hi,

I can see your getting lots of help already so i stay clear the one thing i would like to say is find a new fish shop as the one your going to is a load of rubbish, they are qiving you lots of poor advice and just seem to want to keep there till ringing instead of looking after there customer and there fish.

I've been using water conditioner, I think it's made by Tetra but I'll have to check, it says on the bottle that it works with chlorine and a few other things. I'm not getting a fighter now as I've been advised a few times that they don't mix well. How many fish do you think a tank this size can take once it's cycled keeping in mind that its tall and narrow so doesn't have that much surface area for it's size?

Thanks!

Paul.
