New To Setting Up A Tank

Hi there,

I stumbled along this forum and it look's awesome!! Anyways I just bought a 70L tank and the first question i have is i want to pop it in my babies room and she has quite a large set of drawers would this be fine to hold it? I just didn't know if you NEED a stand. Also how many and what fish do you reccomend that are brightly coloured but not aggressive?

Well I can't suggest exact stocking numbers because I'm not very good at numbers myself but I will suggest some of my favorite fish to keep: guppies and balloon mollies just whatever you do, do NOT get females...they breed like rabbits but platties are nice to keep too, as they hardy, peaceful, and colorful again...try to avoid females...it is easy to tell the difference as the anal fin on a female livebearer is triangular and fanned out and males have a pointed anal fin called a genopodium...here is what they look like http/4.bp.blogspot.com/_SWe_5eU4uW8/TTj5u8KekSI/AAAAAAAAATY/DorC5H7ppxs/s320/mollysvsmalevsfemale.png

I also recommend ghost shrimp as they are very entertaining and they eat just about anything, including poop and algae. Endlers are also very colorful and small fish...cardinal or neon tetras will do nicely too

Yes, you can keep it on a dresser or table if it is sturdy...for my ten gallon I don't use a stand...it's just sitting on a towel on my dresser

my suggestion to you is to do a little research, get an idea about what kind of fish you want, then repost it listing the fish you are interested in keeping and then ask because people can have kind of an idea of what stocking to suggest and when you do this make sure to give the dimensions of your tank as well

Also, have you cycled your tank yet? Or are you just ow setting it up?

Stands are usually a must, Tanks shouldnt be placed on household furniture as weight overtime makes them unstable. They are not built to hold the weight and the weight is not evenly distributed over the whole surface so the dresser may rock from side to side and collapse in the worst case scenario. Remember 1 litre of water is nearly the same as 1kg so 70 kg are going to be sitting on top of that dresser.
Tank stands for aquariums of your size dont cost a lot and it is usually best to find the stand made specifically for your tank. Just follow the make and model of your tank and you should be able to find one. By all means put it on the dresser if you want but I speak from experience, I had a 60l tank smashed because a strong pine dresser gave way in the garage.
