i just picked up a breeding group of sunshine(?) peacocks from one of my work supervisors who was moving and couldnt take them with him. i have one male and what i think is 2 females, along with a few young ones. today i went and bought an albino peacock. these fish along with some kind of purple mixed breed african are the only things in my tank.

as of right now the tank is a 60 gallon, with sand substrate and rock work. filtration is a hob filter that flow 300 gph and a rena xp3. i will be putting in a group of synodontis in the future.

should i stick with peacocks or can i add a few mbuna once the weaker peacocks establish their territory?

thanks
james

I'd stick with just the peacocks, in most cases they just can't handle the aggression of the mbuna. If you really do want to add mbuna though, I'd stick with l.caeruleus. If you add at least 5 of them, they "should" be more interested in chasing their own kind than the peacocks. There's always the off chance of getting a rouge male so I'd make sure you could return them if necessary.

Another factor is feeding, peacocks are carnivores and prefer "meatier" foods, while most mbuna are herbivores and can get bloat. However, l.caeruleus are insectivores, so will mix well with haps and peacocks, just be sure to offer some kind of vegetable matter, spirulina is a good idea.

Labidochromis caeruleus are OMNIVORE

Strictly speaking that's correct - however in the wild they do feed primarily on insects.

My apologies for the incorrect information, from this article though, it looks like we're both right. :shifty:

L. caeruleus is an omnivore, feeding primarily upon insects, snails, and mollusks; however, in the aquarium, this fish can be fed a wide assortment of foods. I personally recommend a good Spirulina based flake food with occassional frozen food supplements, or alternatively,
The European Shrimp Mix. These insectivores wander through their rocky biotope, never lingering at any particular spot, and it seems they are tolerated in the territories of most other species.

James, not too sure on haps, most of them get rather large, I'd probably stick to peacocks and l.caeruleus if wanted.

alright thanks for the advice. im trying to learn alot about peacocks since theyre new to me. i was going with mbuna, but like i said i got these from my boss thats moving out of state.

how would i go about stocking with peacocks? its a 60 us gallon tank. i know with mbuna overstocking is good most of the time to spread out aggression, the peacocks are alot more calm than the mbuna so would i go with less? right now im at 6 peacocks, one mutt mbuna that came with the peacocks, a 3 labs i just purchase. the mbuna may not be a mutt, but i dont know what he is and neither did the guy i got him from, hes light purple with dark purple vertical stripes.

Any chance of a pic of the unknown mbuna? Off hand, the only purple one I can think of is pseudotropheus acei.

Honestly, I think you're about stocked, if you want you might add another 2 labs, sinces they do best in groupls of 5 or more.

i tried getting a few pictures, but none of them came out good. i did google pseudotropheus acei and it doesnt look like the one i have. i think he could possibly just me a mutt.
