Howdy.

I am getting a new tank over the next few weeks, ready for when I move house in mid november.

I want to get one that is AT LEAST 50G but ideally even bigger :)

I plan to use it to house my catfish and plecs, and would like to get a couple of large cichlids aswell.

What would you guys suggest? I want something big, but not TOO big.

I plan to go with a very fine substrate (but not sand). And probably large pieces of bogwood with very spare planting into the bogwood. (similar to FreshMikes 95G tank?)

Ben

well, it depends what kind of cichlids you want, african, central american, ect. if you want you could have my jack dempseys. i need to get rid of them. it also depends how big of a tank it is. you said 50 gal, that could have 1 jack dempsey, but if you had it bigger i think maybe you could have all 3. im not to sure about the tank sizes for jack dempseys tho.

How come he could only have one of your dempseys in a 50 gallon, yet you have 3 of them in a 55 gallon? Since when does 5 gallons allow for 2 extra dempseys?

Im not really interested in Jack dempseys thanks SpaceMonkey.

I have heard they are very aggressive fish and thats NOT what I want. I am looking for a peacful cichlid.

How about festive cichlids or firemouths?

Ben

ya i want sum of those too :D but i cant find ne that the stores say arent "aggressive" :/

Can anyone help me on this?

The fish in the tank are going to be:

4 plecs (Bristlenose, Tiger, L128 and 1 other)
5 synodontsis petricola
2 flagtailed catfish
possibly 3 pictus cats.

What cichlids would you reccomend? Firemouths? Acaras? Festives?

Here is a picture of the tank as it looks at the moment, it is 57 US Gallons:

That tank is screaming for a nice pair of angelfish, prefferably some with the natural colouration rather than the usual marbles and koi's sold in fish stores.

Im not really a fan of angelfish personally I have to say.....

I will investigate just incase though...

A couple of Blua Acaras would go well in there Ben, not too agressive and look stunning!!

Well what about those Pacu things? I don't know what kind of tank size they need but its a suggestion.

I think Pacus get far too big.

I was contemplating Blue Acaras, are they really not that aggressive?

Ben

I've got a single Acara and it's never bothered anything else in the tank, might be a different story if you get a breeding pair though.
I also have a pair of breeding Sajica Cichlids (check my gallery for pics) and they are also extremely peaceful. Even when they are breeding they are not that aggressive. They will chase the other fish away, and there is the odd fin nip here and there, but nothing too major!! :D
