Hi,
I have a planted 6 gallon tank. It is now cycled (which i am very happy about).
I only have one idea of what to stock it with but this may not be so good:

3x Platies (1 male and 2 female)
4x Neon tetra
1x Ghost shrimp

Let me know what you think and if you can post your ideas i will be very greatful!!
Thanks,
Matt

hi matt,

tetras are happier kept in large groups (6+). maybe you could go for a large group of tetras rather than the platys?

L.

just a thought...what about a nice group of harlequins?? they are quite hardy and can make an excellent display in a small planted tank...

The harlequins i have thought about but was told at a pet shop (petsathome) that they prefer big groups of around 10+. How many should go in a group? I wanted something that in time will breed and would be interesting to watch breeding etc. Would they breed (i will be getting another tank for the fry.

i reckon you would get away with about 8 harlequins. they are hard to breed though so maybe not the fish for you if thats what you are interested in. i am sure someone with experience of smaller tanks will have some better ideas for you. i have only ever had reasonably large tanks so i have been lucky enough to have large shoals...what about cherry barbs? they are interesting to watch and i believe they breed quite easily.

I would go for real micro fish in a tank that size like Chilli Rasbora and Pygmy Gourami. The Chilli Rasobras are a schooling fish and would do well in a group of 8 or so in there since they are so tiny maybe even 10 or a nice group of the Pygmy or Sparkling Gourami would look great 5 or 6 of them would be brilliant! And a small group of Cherry Shrimp would be a nice addition.

If you go for a larger schooling fish like Neons or the Harlequins go for a group of 5 though I would stick to the really tiny micro fish for a tank like this.

You say you have been going to a pets at home - where abouts in the UK are you from as lets be honest, some Pets at Home are okay but they will never have the best selection of fish just wondering if you are round the corner from a good shop :)

Big brother is watching you Hardlife91 :hyper:

Its on his profile :D

I think platies are too big for a 6 g.

I agree with the other posters who have suggested a small shoal of something. Or ou could have all male guppies or Endlers.

Just be careful which shoaler you pick; not all of them are suitable for small tanks, even though they're small themselves; danios for instance need three feet to swim in; mosquito rasboras don't.

Definitely get some shrimp, they're brilliant.

It's such a small tank, I wouldn't want to let anything breed in there; if you want to raise some fry, get your bigger tank, then give it a go; but learn from this tank first :good:

Thanks AquaTom -

If you are in Notts Hardlife you have to check out Wharf Aquatics!! It wipes the floor with any Pets at Home :)

Yes, Wharf Aquatics in Pinxton is one of the best LFS around the east midlands. Nice to have another member from Notts on the board :D
